ok i got a really bad score on grammer a 51 it says but i did well (for me) in essay a 10 it brought me up 50 to a 560. my ? is what should i do to improve grammer? What books or whatever can help?

floridakmm,

Try The Elements of Style as a reference book. Read fiction and nonfiction.

Much of grammar is also based in logic, like in these sample sentences:

"Me and Sam took the SAT in March."
"They told my sister and I that they were going to be late."
"Annie and myself are going to visit colleges."

Sorry about the bad sentences; I made them up off the top of my head. These are all common errors in speech. To know which is right, cross out the other people from the sentences to get this:

"Me took the SAT in March."
"They told I that they were going to be late."
"Myself am going to visit colleges."

Which is wrong, obviously. I think there were a few of these on the test.

To check if something is a run-on sentence, try to separate the two parts (before and after the comma) and see if each sentence makes sense on its own. If yes, there should be a semicolon.

"I'm not happy with my score, I'm retaking the test in May." is a run-on sentence because it's made up of two separate sentences ("I'm not happy with my score." and "I'm retaking the test in May.") but only separated by a comma.

Proper grammar would make it "I'm not happy with my score; I'm retaking the test in May."

It's hard for me to give detailed advice because I don't know specifically what parts you're struggling with, but it's pretty easy to learn if you actually think about what the rules mean instead of just memorizing.

Yea that was my problem was well...
my essay was solid-not stellar (but I did mention religion and politics and may have offended someone :) )
it was a 9 and my multiple choice was only a 58 :

Ok that is helpful that taking out the other words i didn't know about. the paragraph stuff is really easy for me i get most of the questions right it is the underline in the sentence for finding the error and fixing it that is soo hard for me. Thanks for the help. willimingtonwave you did better than me so don't feel too bad

willmingtonwave what was your writing score? I'm just curious about the curve

Should I retake just for the CR?
I got 720 CR, 800 M, 800 W.
Total is 2320

no you shouldn't. You have solid scores in all, and when the percentiles come in, I can bet my bottom dollar that will be a very high percentile. (do you really want to risk 2 800's?)

how do u know ur essay score already? is it on collegeboard?

i got a 2240...
720 M
770 CR
750 W

Should I retake? I am looking at dartmouth, amherst, williams, columbia, etc.

I got 1 wrong math and it was a 790, trust me, I definately did not get more than one wrong (I'd be stunned and very disappointed if I got more than one wrong).

I agree, I recieved a 790 math and I am relatively certain that I only got one wrong... although I guess we'll find out soon enough

testace thats amazing dont retake!!

how do u all know ur essay scores already?

it's shown under... view my scores?

or if it's not there try looking under "sent scores"

Should I retake for a better writing score?? (considering ivy league colleges)

790M
770CR
720W (71, 10)

icandi, I would retake if you feel as if your CR and Writing scores are maintanable in the next text, and if you feel like you did poorly on math. 2240 is definetly good enough for any school, and it is above all averages except for HYP.

ctgirl, I would not retake, seeing that the Math and CR scores are the sections predominantly looked at. (1560) I'd say your set for ivies.

720M
690CR
710W essay-9
2120

retake for MIT, Caltech and USAFA?
i know there are people who have worse scores than this that got in, check the MIT forum...

mobius you should defenitely retake, if only for the math, for MIT and Caltech. The scores look adequate for USAFA though. If you are anywhere close to MIT caliber then you should have no problem scoring higher.

everyone is getting like 2290s and they're like oh my retest. jeez.

2090...wouldn't take it again but my mom won't allow me to leave home until i do
