SCS Ranking

I'm curious, and I've heard a few different numbers, as to how the School of Computer Science ranks among other national universities? A link would be very helpful.

My son really wanted SCS. IT is one of the top CS meccas (top are SCS at CMU, Stanford and MIT). Did you get in?

Yes I did. I'm very very excited. People keep asking me what it's ranked, and I have no answer!

There is no undergrad ranking for computer science that I've ever seen, but US News and World Report rated the grad programs at Stanford, MIT, Carnegie Mellon and Berkeley as all tied for first place.

well there's really no undergrad ranking....however....look at the salaries...$70,000 average for bachelor's.....and then look at the facilities.... Computer Science Department (CSD)
* Robotics Institute (RI)
* Institute for Software Research International (ISRI)
* Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII)
* Language Technologies Institute (LTI)
* Machine Learning Department (MLD)
* Entertainment Technology Center (ETC)
and then look at the individuals...Randy Pausch.....Peter Lee....Red Whittaker...so basically cmu is pretty good at compsci, oh yeah...by the way tartan racing just took first place at the Dharpa Grand Challenge with "Boss" and remember how Stanford won the past two races (i.e. Junior)? well that's because some cmu people went to stanford for better weather and built the "Junior"!

SCS is generally referred to as being within the "Top 5" CS departments in the country. The program is very academically rigorous.

Hope this helps:
Computer Science program at CMU is excellent. And very highly regarded. Although I am not a fan of college rankings, but if it is of any interest US News 2008 Grad School College Rankings ranks CMU Computer Science program at number 1 in USA ( tie with four other schools). US News 2008 undergrad Ranking places CMU Computer Engineering program at # 2 ( with MIT being at # 1).There is no US News under grad ranking for any CS program.
Top companies recruit at CMU and I understand that Microsoft made 57 jobs offers at CMU. Some undergraduates had job offers of over $100,000.

SCS has excellent facilities and lots of opportunities for Under graduate research.

somehow CS at CMU dropped from 1st place to 4th place this year in the new ranking... anyone know why?

The top four swap with each other every year. Check the statistics for the past few years and you'll see them rotating around.

Stanford didn't win the past two. There were three DARPA races. Stanford won the 2nd one because, as you said, CMU people built their car. CMU won the third won by a long shot. The first one, very few hear of it. Basically, all the robots failed to achieve any goals, but CMU's robot went the farthest.

I would like to point out that rankings are a terrible way to judge a school. It's quite clear that they mean absolutely nothing. A margin of less than 20 between ranked schools in insignificant really. US News can go to hell.
