SEAL from USNA?

How difficult is it to get a SEAL billet from USNA? What besides class rank determines whether or not you receive it? Thanks for all ya'lls help.

I'm in NROTC, so the selection is a little different, but not much. The most important thing besides class rank is the PST, which is a physical screening test you will take during the application process. Last year a guy got SEAL selected out of the academy with the following scores: 8:15 500 yd swim(sidestroke), 85 pushups(two mins), 85 situps, 18 pullups, 8:25 mile and a half run in boots and utes (boots and camie pants). It is super competitive, but a lot of guys end up going SWO or riverine and then trying to lateral transfer in later.

Getting into SEALS will be difficult - regardless of whether you are in ROTC, the Academy - or you have your college degree and go to OCS.

The SEALS have very tough standards - and all it takes is strong determination and a the ability to meet those standards!

The selection criteria is very tough - for good reasons. So the basic answer to you is that selection to SEALS is fairly straight-forward for those who can meet the standards.

Some programs are very "over-subscribed" - like those wanting to be a pilot. I don't want to get into a shouting match - but there are those who lack the high academic standards and tough course work and can go on to become great pilots. The academic standards to become a Nuclear Engineer are extremely high. It takes a lot of effort and luck to become a pilot, because there are lots who want to do it ...while the Navy is constantly trying to recruit (and sometimes "draft") people into the Nuc Program.

The SEAL program is very small, doesn't need a large number of candidates, and is highly selective (and needs to be highly selective). If you are tough and passionate about becoming a SEAL - you probably can make it.

danbrenn,

USNA runs a SEAL screener and this weighs heavily on SEAL selection. The SEAL PFT is also another factor, but it doesn't simulate the physical and mental stress that the screener does.

Jadler,

Is the screener to select who gets to go to mini BUDs for 1/c cruise? and I heard that ROTC guys can elect to attend, do you know if that is true?

I heard that USNA Class of 2008 got 26 SEAL billets at service selection

I believe it is for both. We had 2 SEAL selectees in my company.
