<p>Coureur -- You're right! The city was named by a citrus grower in 1875, and the college was named after the city. Wonder how I missed that after five years of Latin. I think I somehow associated it with the Pomo tribe, which was in northern rather than southern California. Oh well, somehow I think telling my son it was named after the Roman goddess of fruit might not have made the difference. Of course, I could be wrong.</p>
<p>SBmom, great Bennington story. I chose my first college, UCSC, never having visited -- and hated it. My good friend had better sense. She didn't apply there because she thought the fog would make her hair frizzy.</p>
