Searching for schools

I'm a Junior looking around for a few more colleges to add to my list for next year.

I'm interested primarily in LAC's although I wouldn't necessarily mind a smaller university (say 5,000 or so undergrads). I'd like to stay in the Midwest, preferably in a suburban or rural setting.

Major-wise, I'm thinking Classics, so a strong program in said subject is important. ;) Academics should be challenging, but not quite all-consuming either.

I'm not into drugs or excessive partying, so I would prefer that they don't dominate the student body. I don't mind some partying, but it should be limited. There should also be a good number of activities that students participate in.

Finally, if they're of any use, here are my "stats":
GPA: 4.0 UW don't know W
Rank: 1/500ish
Have taken essentially the most challenging schedule possible
PSAT: 220 (CR: 79, M: 65, W: 76)
Haven't taken either SAT or ACT, but scores should be similar, hopefully a little higher on Math section
AP: Euro 4

EC's: Eagle Scout
several regional and state awards in Band
work approximately 10hrs/week
National Latin Exam: Summa Cum Laude 06, 06
- perfect paper 06
North Dakota Junior Classical League Webmaster 06-07, 1st Vice President 07-08
NDJCL Certamen 1st place 06, 07
NDJCL Sweepstakes 1st place 06, 07
Concordia College Latin Days Certamen 1st place 06, second place 07
HeavenGames staff (volunteer) March 06-present, site director February 07-November 07

And here is the list of colleges I've come up with so far:
St Olaf
Carleton
Grinnell
University of Chicago
Washington University in St. Louis

It looks like you've got a great start. Here are a few more:

Macalester College (suburban locale in St. Paul, MN; don't know about classics there)
Lawrence University (suburban/in-town in Appleton, WI)
Oberlin College (rural, small town in Ohio)
Kenyon College (very rural in Ohio; excellent humanities programs generally)

My cousin is looking at St. Olaf and she says the classics department there is very strong.

Good luck

Thanks, I'll be sure to take a look!

St. Olaf is a great school. And I'm a floozy for Chicago (I go there), so if you have any questions, PM me.

Oberlin would also be a great choice for somebody who is academic but wants to balance work with other activities.

In my (limited) experience, Michigan has really tried to recruit Classics majors for its department. It's different in many ways from some of the schools on your list, but I would not rule it out.

Thank you for the advice as well. :)

grinnell seems to be a perfect fit for you, definitely check it out if you havent already.

Look into Knox in Galesburg, IL.
