Second degree and financial assistance options

Hi, graduated college back in 2011. Looking to return back to school this coming Spring for Nursing. Plan to pay most of my prerequisites out of my own pocket. With work I receive back $2500-$5,000 depending on my employment status and if I get a 3.0 or above not to worried about that. That will help big time pay for the prerequisites. However, once accepting in a nursing program hoping to receive some type of financial aid. Figure with books, lab fees, clinical, and credit cost be about $30,000.

I am eligible for $10,000 not to familiar with FASFA. I took out financial aid my freshman year paid off my loans. However, went part time to school after my first year took no loans or grants out paid out of my own pocket.

Curious any advice who been through this should I be eligible for future loans or will I have to go through private loans?

Have about $6,000 worth of credit debt looking to pay off in 16 month’s so hopefully make me eligible for Loans.

Also have one car loan out at the moment as well.

Now people keep telling me go the Accelerated route with nursing, which I could probably do it. However, I have to stop working need money for the 16-20 month’s not at work. Is it possible to take college loans out for living expenses as well?

Appreciate the feedback.

From what? Are you talking about fed loans for freshman independents?

@kelsmom What can this person qualify for? I know not eligible for grants. The school isn’t likely going to give grants for a second degree.

Are you going for an AA in nursing or a BSN? since you already have a bachelors, and cost/aid is an issue, then why not go for the AA, and then later get the BSN.

What was your Bachelors in?

did you look at the school’s website to see if their are any nursing awards? Some schools have endowed ones, but not sure if they’re very large, for multiple years, or for 2nd degrees.

If necessary, you may need to take out max Fed loans each year, even if you don’t need them, and bank excess to use for later. Otherwise you’re going to have a hard time getting private loans.

You do not have to report banked savings from student loans on FAFSA. So keep that in mind.

Because you already have a bachelor’s degree, you are only eligible to borrow the federal unsubsidized loans that yuo qualify for when you file the FAFSA. The college/university where you study may have other scholarships available.

Eligible for $10,000 from FASFA when I put it in not sure if it is by year or all in all. I go for AA in nursing, but hospital I work at only hires BSNs. Feel have a better shot obtaining a job after college with my employer. I could still be eligible for private loans? I am also thinking of the Navy and researching found out they have a program for.nursing student’s when time comes closer have to find out if I am eligible for the program since I already have a degree.

So only available what FASFA gives me? I can’t apply for Stafford loans or any type of grant government loans?

Fafsa does not give you money. The federal government has loans for which you can qualify if you file a FAFSA. Is that what you mean?

I guess never used FASFA before so not sure how it work’s. I plugged some numbers in a calculator online I found to give me an estimate.

The operant word is estimate! You would be eligible for Direct Loans.

That is either showing a big Stafford independent loan or a Pell grant and loan.

That estimate is thinking that you’re a first time college student, which you are not.

The NPC won’t work right for you since you ALREADY have a degree. It may be showing a Pell Grant, thinking that you don’t yet have a degree. Since you do, you can’t get a Pell Grant.

You can’t get gov’t grants because you already have a bachelors degree.

The Stafford loan is from the FAFSA application.

I doubt that you’d qualify. If your income NOW is high enough, then you might get a private loan for this ONE year, but once you cut back on your work hours, you won’t qualify for future years. Private loans are based on INCOME and credit score…not just credit score.

What is your income now?

So, federal grant is Pell grant and not available for 2nd degree. Unless your school will give you a grant you can’t qualify for a grant. You can borrow federal loans but only to the annual limit until you reach the maximum. Read the federal loan pages. Total limit on undergrad borrowing for all years is 32k dependent and 57500 independent.

What you are saying fafsa gives you 10k makes no sense. Is that the EFC or something, that is meaningless as you aren’t a first time freshman. FSFSA is just a form you fill out. A form doesn’t give anything. You have to read what it says you can get and from who. You might be able to borrow privately if you have good credit but I doubt you are going to be allowed to borrow much if you aren’t holding a job. Maybe you have a cosigner?

I think she filled out either a NPC or a FAFSA forecaster, but the calculator didn’t have a place to indicate that she already had a degree. So, it likely showed a Pell Grant and a student loan…or a Stafford and Perkins loan.

Hi, 27 years old looking to return back to college. I currently have a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and Business Administration. I have worked five year's in various healthcare field's. Right now I am working in psychiatric/behavioral health, but the pay and the work is burning me out.

So, she’s independent and working…so probably the calculator wasn’t showing grants, it was likely showing full loans for independent students…so 9500 plus maybe some Perkins.
