I'm entering my senior year as a finance major with 3.96 gpa from a good flagship school. I'm considering graduating early and finding a job in finance, but I could earn a B.S. in accounting by staying the final semester.

Would a second degree in accounting in addition to a degree in finance make me a more attractive job candidate for a career related to finance? How about accounting?

Yes, an accounting degree, with a finance degree, is worth the extra semester of school.

^not necessarily. it could just mean another semester’s worth of tuiition. Plus, you’ll have to stay in school another semester.

One thing you could do: Look nonstop for finance and/or accounting jobs the whole semester, and if you get a finance job, don’t stay the extra semester, if you get the acconting job, stay the extra semester. If you don’t get any, then idk, make your decision then, i guess, to either get the extra degree or just focus all your attention on your job search.

Yes, it would be a wise move, since by achieving a second degree in accounting you will be close to 150 hours, and you will be able to become a CPA, even if you go with finance. All of these aspects will dramatically increase your employment opportunities for both finance and accounting positions. Did you notice that most corporate jobs ask for either accounting or finance degree? You cannot go wrong by completing both. I regret that my school does not allow us to double major in business.

I would get both especially if you have the money to do so. You can never go wrong with an accounting + finance degree. You’ll have a better chance finding a job in this rough market.

There are more options for accounting majors than finance majors. An accounting major can get a finance job but not visa-versa. I would not major in finance without coupling it with an accounting degree. Now, I’m not saying that Finance is a worthless degree; I’m saying that you can increase your maketability by staying in school that extra semester.

Thanks for all the replies that’s kind of what I was expecting. The tuition aspect is fine since my scholarships will go through that semester. I have noticed that a lot of the corporate jobs ask for either degree. Whatdidyou, I agree that it’s a good plan to gauge my employment opportunities this fall and make a decision later.

One more question; right now I’m in the 7th month of an 8 month cooperative education assignment in the controlling department of a company. Is the controlling experience attractive to finance related companies? Bank of America and Suntrust recruit at my school and they’re kind of my top two choices. Would banks be fine with my controlling experience?

If not I can stay the final semester and pick up a finance related internship the summer before I graduate.

Thanks again for the help.
