My son who is homeschooled has been fortunate enough to be named a Coca Cola Semi-Finalist. I am completing the Secondary Report and am not sure how to update his transcript with his senior year courses that won't be complete until May. His transcript is pretty traditional in appearance. Should I just list them as I did his other subjects, but only list them as 1/2 credit since he is only 1/2 through the school year? What do schools do with senior year courses on the transcripts when it's too early to assign them a final grade?
My second question is how are weighted GPAs calculated? I looked online and have a decent idea of HOW to calculate this, but I'm not clear on exactly what subjects get included. For example, 4 credits of Bible, 1 credit of keyboarding, 1/2 credit health, etc). Can anyone give me an idea of what is "normally" considered when calculating a weighted GPA? (If it matters, we didn't include a weighted GPA on the common app which is a shame as he will have taken 12 AP classes by the time he graduates.) Thanks for any help!

I am no expert, but if the transcript shows the classes are AP, I don’t see why you would need to weight the GPA. I Ifinally decided to put and just list unweighted; I think the schools will recalculate anyway using their own parameters… As for grades in the senior year, I think the common app asks, “What is the last reporting period included ?” and you have to answer it. I submitted a transcript that shows everything through junior year, and shows the courses for this year (including one college class that is spring semester only, and one that was fall semester only), and I put a Mid-term grade (since we submitted the transcript in November). By all means you should put the amount of credits the class will carry when it is completed, not the amount earned right now. You will (or can) submit a mid-year report as soon as your semester is over, reporting the fall term grades. I hope that helps. Congrats on your son’s Coke honors!

Thanks for your reply. I had already completed the common app school report. This is a slightly different version of that school report - one specific for the scholarship. This separate school report is slightly different than that of the common app and asks for the weighted GPA. On his common app school report, I just listed an unweighted GPA. I hope I completed this one correctly. What I had done was looked online to see how some of the colleges recalculate the GPAs and followed their routine. Most of the colleges that I found just used grades from the core subjects: English/Lit; Math; Science; Foreign Lang. and weighted those. I used the gradetracker online to calculate the weighted GPA from those subject areas. I hope this was right. I’m planning on mailing his packet today :P

You don’t have to list them as half credit just because you’re halfway through the year. They’ll understand it’s IP (in progress).

AP courses are usually weighted by 1 point so it’s 5.
