Secret Societies?

Are there any of them at Cornell? Are there any weird club houses or anything like Yale has with Skull and Bones, as well as others. Also, I have heard rumors that some of the dorms have underground tunnels. Is any of this true>?

..."underground tunnels...?"

If there were a "secret society," then why would they post it all over the internet? lol.

You mean like Quill & Dagger or Sphinx Head, well that's open for debate...

Daniel Lee from Yale (half way down) writes the most informative passage, in part:

...Sphinx Head is a highly secretive senior honorary society at Cornell University. The oldest and most prestigious secret society at Cornell, Sphinxhead was founded in 1890 by a group of students in partnership with Andrew Dickson White. The first class was tapped in the Spring of 1891. The tradition of tapping outstanding students continues today with new members being tapped in both the Spring and Fall Semesters. Since its early years, the society has been a prominent force on campus and has been responsible for a number of special events at Cornell such as Dragon Day (1901 to present) to the pumpkin placed atop McGraw Tower (1997).

The only other similar society, Quill and Dagger, was founded in 1893 by two Sphinx Head Members who were expelled for "immoral acts" which disgraced the University. Sphinx Head is known for honoring outstanding leaders based on their strength of character and dedication; Quill and Dagger is known for tapping seniors based on their titles and/or positions of influence in Campus organizations. Seniors are allowed to join one of the two societies.

While the location of Sphinx Head's meeting place is secret, it exists in a hidden location somewhere on Central Campus. The membership takes an oath to keep the location of their "hallowed hall" secret since they do not want superficial representations of their society's purpose to entice perspective seniors to join....

After my research of both Sphinx Head and Quill and dagger, I find Sphinx Head to be much more deeply shrouded by secrecy and secret rites of passage. The initiation the new members must go through has a striking resemblance to Skull and Bones at Yale, perhaps a product of one of their founders, Andrew Dickson White....

You printed only part of the truth about Quill & Dagger. There's a major leeg discussion of the Cornell secret fraternity at

I go to Penn, but my brother was in Quill & Dagger. He told me about some of their secret rights and ceremonies, but he swore me to total secrecy about what he told me. You can now read the truth for yourself

That's awesome!

Secret societies are both creepy and cool.

Quill and Dagger is just a very prestigious and secretive honor society that has meetings in Lyon Tower.

It seems very cool, but I think the secrecy is the main asset to the organization. If it wasn't secret, it wouldn't be cool.

The www.EnPassant.com website says that Quill & Dagger is much better than Sphinx Hedge. My brother was in Quill and Dagger so I tend to agree. But my neighbor is going to Cornell and will probably try out for Quill & Dagger. Is that the right choice over Sphinx Hedge? Does Cornell have any other secret fraternities? Do they all have secret buildings on campus with secret meeting rooms?

my friend lives on the top floor in mcfaddin. he claims to have spied the shadows of their secretiveness once in a while ^_^

in the secret tower. Do you know if its true. If I can up from Philly can I arrange to join one of the orgies since my brother was in Quill & Dagger? Do you know if Sphinx Hedge also has orgies in its tower?

what.....................

It's sphinx Head, not hedge lol

He said he's not allowed under the bylaws of Quill and Dagger to tell me the details about the Q&D society's orgies. But he just kept smiling and smiling and smiling, so I think I got the message about those orgies. He also said he never heard of any orgies at Sphinx Hedge, so I guess you have to sign up for Quill and Dagger if you go to Cornell and you want to spend your time when your not in class having orgies.

Dude, "sphinx HEAD," it's not a bush, it's a statue of a lion-man thing... like in Egypt?.... or are you trying to make fun of the society by calling it "sphinx hedge"?

My brother called it Sphinx Hedge, so I assumed it's a nickname the way Q&D is a nickname for Quill and Dagger. If you are in Sphinx Hedge and you find the name to be offensive then I apologize to you. If you are in another secret society, then stop trying to confuse the readers of this website about the difference between all the secret societies at Cornell. At Penn, we try not to talk about our secret societies. The reason is that their secret!!!!

from question 4 to put the name issue to rest:

Quill & Dagger and Sphinx Head are "non-secret secret societies", meaning that non-members know they exist and who the members are, but don't know what they do and why. Very mysterious!

I agree with your message.

sweet (10 characters)

Quill & Dagger is the hot secret fraternity at Cornell. Sphinx Hedge is for sissies.

I want in. How do you join?
