Please rank the following schools in terms of prestige and recognition. Also please indicate what state (or country) you are from because prestige is not universal. For example, Umass Amherst might have a decent reputation around the New England area. But it might not have the same recognition in another region such as the west (California). Thanks for all your help :)

Schools:
University of Massachusetts Amherst
University of Maryland College Park
University of Illinois Urbana Champaign
Indiana University Bloomington
Northeastern University
Boston College
Boston University
New York University

P.s. I applied to the undergrad business school for all of the above. However, I am asking for the prestige of the entire university, not taking into account of the strength of the business program alone (similar to name/brand recognition?).

1)New York University
2)Boston College
3)University of Illinois Urbana Champaign
4)Boston University
4)Indiana University Bloomington
6)Northeastern University
7)University of Massachusetts Amherst
7)University of Maryland College Park

its just ignorant to pretend like schools don’t have prestige thats recognized by other colleges and many potential employers and that this wont make a difference somewhere along the line, if applying to graduate school a more reputable/more highly regarded institution can help your chances of being admitted and a more “prestigious” undergrad degree without graduate school can make you tougher comp. for job positions in some instances but not always.

i’m not saying everyone who goes to a more highly regarded school does better, because its all about how you use the education you’re offered. but it can be an advantage to you because its just naive to believe that jobs and graduate schools wont consider the school you received your undergraduate degree to at least some degree of consideration, but i do think that looking at overall prestige isn’t too helpful either. maybe looking at the most widely recognized and highly regarded/respected business programs because that will make the most difference for you, not the general reputation of the school.

but i also don’t think there are “top” schools, i think everyone has their own individual top schools, because everyone considers different things the best and everyone goes into different majors and all levels of schools have good programs so it just depends on the person/situation.

well i live in GA so i really don’t know anything about most of these midwest schools but NYU and BC are definitely reputable. i agree with vc08 as far as the school rankings, but i think you should make your choice based on more than the prestige alone, make sure you love the school and like all aspects! b/c if you go to a school that is prestigious but are miserable i doubt you’ll be too successful there no matter what the rep. of the school is, so make sure you go somewhere you’ll be happy! good luck in your decision =]

I agree that ultimately it is the individual student who can make the best of their education and rise to the opportunities provided afterward. College is just another tool to get to that point…and granted, some tools are better than others :p. That being said…(I am from Massachusetts):

Boston College ~great rep

Boston University

Northeastern University ~good co-op program, undergrads will have lots of pre-career experience

University of Massachusetts Amherst ~party school :s

I can’t really say anything about the rest of these because I know too little about them. I have heard that New York University has a decent medical grad school…
University of Maryland College Park
University of Illinois Urbana Champaign
Indiana University Bloomington
New York University

If prestige is measured by the tendency for people to take notice and act impressed at the mention of the school, none of these schools would necessarily provoke that response except NYU, at which the response would be more about the location than the institution.

Boston College
New York University
Boston University
University of Maryland College Park
Indiana University Bloomington
University of Massachusetts Amherst
University of Illinois Urbana Champaign
Northeastern University

I think that these schools are about equal in “prestige,” speaking very generally (and this order doesn’t reflect my personal estimation of them):

1)BC, NYU

2) BU, UMD, UIUC

3) Northeastern, IU

4) U Mass Amherst

The problem is that some of these schools are known for particular programs that completely upset the order: UIUC in engineering, NYU/Tisch in the arts, and Indiana in music, for example, not to mention Northeastern and its coops. I think that some of the schools probably have more prestige than they deserve–or less–because of location.

1 Boston College
2 University of Illinois Urbana Champaign
3 Boston University
4 New York University
5 Northeastern University
6 University of Maryland College Park
7 Indiana University Bloomington
8 University of Massachusetts Amherst

Thank you everyone for your time. I would like to put it out there that even though I asked this question in regards to prestige, I am in no way basing my decision on prestige alone. Obviously I will be going to a school where my needs are met, i.e the best fit for me. But as said by Christina, the prestige of your undergraduate school does have relative importance. I mean, after all, the name of that school will be on your resume for the rest of your life!

What do yall think of the University of Maryland (business program)?

I’m from Chicago, and everyone around here is instantly impressed if you tell them you go to U of I. Seriously… everyone is obsessed with that school. NYU and BC also have great name recognition here and are just as prestigious, if not more prestigious, than U of I. BU isn’t too bad, either is IU. But pretty much nobody has heard of Northeastern, UMass Amherst, or UMD.

I completely agree that going to a school with an impressive name can be a factor in deciding where to go.

I don’t know anything about UMD’s business program, but U of I has a fantastic business program. Kids accepted into the business school at U of I are only the top students at their high school.

NYU’s reputation has really been rising a lot in these past few years and doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. The caliber of professors there is stellar, so I hear, because of the location and everything else in between. Give it a few more years and I can see it becoming something like Georgetown U is right now.

UMD has a very good business program, heres an article ranking the program 9th in the country, moving up from 11th. [UMd business school cracks top 10 rankings](http://www.gazette.net/stories/08252008/businew170708_32484.shtml)
but looking at other websites it seems like it is ranked more around 35th? idk what the difference in the rankings are but here is a webpage about UMD’s business program if that will help… [University of Maryland: Undergraduate Profile ? BusinessWeek](<a href=“Bloomberg Businessweek - Bloomberg”>Bloomberg Businessweek - Bloomberg)
but another really great business program is Emory’s! its very highly regarded, im not sure what your grades are/if you really want to stay in the midwest/northeast because that seems to be your choices but that could be a good one to try for
