Seeking scholarship advice

My daughter was admitted early decision to an Ivy. She is still taking a heavy course load, stretched thin by extra curricular activities, and doesn't have much energy left to write the multiple essays required for some of the scholarship applications. Are there any scholarships that are relatively easy to apply to and provide decent awards? I.e., do not require a lot of essays? She needs to come up with $8,000 (obviously from several sources.)

local ones are all that are really out there. A few national ones, look in the financial aid section here on CC and they are listed.

Is it $8,000 total for all 4 years, or $8,000/year (actually $32,000). If she needs $8,000 total, it might be doable, but even the local scholarships are pretty competitive. Have you looked at your employer and her fathers employer to see if they offer any scholarships? Have you spoken with the college to see if they have any scholarships that are department specific she can apply for?

Thanks. It looks like it will be 8,000 per year. She’s a top student but since she’ll be going to an Ivy I don’t think they have any merit-based scholarships. Neither of our employers offer anything but will look locally.

the scholarship applications are as difficult and time consuming as the college apps are. My son is in the same position, and he has a timeline of when to get things in. Still quite daunting.

Your D should be eligible for unsubsidized loans, not for the whole $8,000/ year. But for more than 1/2 of it. If she can get one or two of the smaller local scholarships, maybe make some money with a summer job she should be able to get to the $8,000/ year she needs. I know that is not ideal, but it would allow her to attend with minimal loans.

Good luck with the scholarships! And congrats on her acceptance!

hmmmm…

it’s very doubtful that she’s going to get what she needs. Private scholarships are hard to get, and usually ONLY for freshman year. So, she’d be short for years 2, 3, and 4. The major scholarships for 4 years have deadlines that have passed.

Private scholarship money isn’t just handed out for filling out an easy app. If that were the case, a million kids would fill them out. There are many, many kids with ivy quality stats.

Edited to clarify…Are you trying to reduce your “family contribution”???

Keep in mind that scholarships REPLACE need. Scholarships won’t go to reduce your “family contribution” which it sounds like you’re trying to do.

Scholarships will get sent to her school, and the school will then reduce her grants. You’re still expected to pay your share…which sounds like is at least $8k per year.

Your D was accepted ED and the decision has to be made very soon. You’ve seen the FA package and maybe you’re about $8k short. Scholarships won’t make up that shortfall because they’ll get applied to need. Your D will have to work over the summer and/or take out student loans.

How much are you expected to pay each year? If you’re short about $8k, and you need to give the ED acceptance soon, then you’ll have to talk to your D about loans and working.
