I initially made the embarrassing mistake of thinking you were looking for a Los Angelos college/university. Anyone wanted to bump this thread so we might get some more comments before it disappears from the first page.

I was hoping your thread would get more action. Decided to bring it back to the front page one more time so it might be seen.

Maybe you can post here about Uarts.

Still surprised at how few middle sized programs have been mentioned. Not everyone ends up at a conservatory.

As D has been adding/subtracting schools from her list, I’ve been crunching numbers. It seems to me that a common characteristic of schools that appeal to her is the actual size of the School of Music (200+ to 600+) and the trumpet studio (typically ~20 kids), although this wasn’t something we have consciously been evaluating (and it’s not always easy to figure out on the internet). I know every school is unique, but does anyone have thoughts on the inherent merits/debits of different size SoM/studios?

You are doing some good internet work if you are finding sizes of Trumpet studios. Difficult enough to get the number in the school of music of non stand alone programs.

Merits? Small means actually working with a professor and in ensembles. Instead of working TA and not being ensembles as an underclassman.

Big means competition that drives players to get better.

Finding out if they have enough ensembles so everyone in the studio has a real chance to perform might be even more difficult.

I’ve gotten some good input via post and PM from different folks on several potential schools so far. Combined with suggestions from D’s teacher, we’re beginning to develop a game plan. Some schools that look interesting otherwise, but that haven’t generated any commentary from the trumpet folks are Vanderbilt, Carnegie-Mellon, and Depauw. If anyone has specific experiences/insights on these schools for trumpet performance, please post or PM me. Thanks.
