Selection index question ...

D and I met with her guidance counselor this morning for junior conference. PSAT scores have not yet been released, but GC told us D got 75R, 65M, 73W and was in 99th percentile. Her selection index number is 213. We live in Tennessee. Any idea how I can find out if that qualifies her as a semi-finalist? From what I've read in different threads, the cutoff for each state is different. Thanks in advance for any assistance!

It looks like Tennessee's cutoff was 216 last year. See this link

213 is an excellent score - Congratulations to your daughter!

Thank you for your reply, jrpar. Unfortunately, the link didn't work, but I would like to see the page to which you are referring. Thanks again!

Congrats to your daughter!

The cutoffs are on page 2 of the official PSAT score thread.

I'll paste them here to save future searches:

Thank you! Am I too stupid to understand this? I copied it from the message posted on the official thread you told me about. My daughter is currently a junior and took the PSAT in October. If 213 is the cutoff, she's golden. If it's 216, she's not. Which one applies to her? Thanks to all of you for being patient. I just don't understand this stuff. We only had her junior conference this morning where we learned her score. She was very excited and was hoping she made semifinalist. Her guidance counselor didn't know the cutoff for Tennessee and daughter asked me to find out before she gets home from school. Obviously, she doesn't get her smarts from me. :(

You will not find out until autumn if she made semifinalist or not, but either way, her score is wonderful!

I get it now. I totally get it. Thanks so much! Yes, we are so very proud of her. I agree that her score is fabulous! Thanks for your patience with me. She's our one and only and I'm trying to educate myself on all these tests, scholarship programs, etc. I've learned much from this site.

216 was this past year's cutoff for Tennessee; it was 213 the year before. The cutoffs generally don't move more than a point or two each year (although Tennessee proves that theory wrong in this case). You'll find out end of August/early September (depends on your school) if your daughter is a semi-finalist (and check the posts around then on CC - no doubt someone will find the state-by-state list and post it)

Get ready for the deluge of mail from colleges based on her scores :)

Splashmom,
Even if she doesn't make semi finalist, she still has a wonderful PSAT score and will be commended. Some colleges give scholarships to commended students. A couple of weeks ago, on either this board or on the scholarship board, I posted a list of colleges that give scholarships to commended students. One was St. Olaf, a nice LAC in Minnesota.

In addition, with PSAT scores as high as hers, her SAT scores will more than likely be in the range for her to earn merit aid from colleges like Tulane and many state and private universities that give merit aid for students with high SATs, whether or not the students are National Merit scholars. Check the financial aid and scholarship pages of colleges to see what they may offer.

Thanks, Northstarmom! D has pretty much been considering Tennessee schools only to this point because of the $4,000 yearly she can get through the HOPE Scholarship program funded by our state lottery. She has no interest in Vandy as it is just 20 minutes away and she feels the need to spread her wings and be more independent. We've visited Rhodes (loved it), Emory (loved it, but wouldn't get the $4k per year from HOPE Scholarship - has to be a Tennessee school) and Sewanee (beautiful campus, but not her cup of tea). Her GC told her today to include schools beyond Tennessee as she feels she'll get some scholarship offers. Her father and I are more than willing to take out loans, but she wants to attend law school after college, so we're hoping she will get some decent offers for her undergraduate years. I will look for your post concerning schools that offer scholarships to commended students, too. I've read several of your posts and you always have such helpful info. Thanks again!
