Selection Process: Any thoughts on 'best buys' for these out-of-state schools?

New College of Florida OOS cost is comparable to some in-state costs: https://www.ncf.edu/admissions/cost-and-aid/scholarships/out-of-state-freshmen/

I’m really high on the school for a kid who wants to prepare for grad school.
Likely blows away all the other schools on your list in terms of sending grads on to grad school with only UNC somewhat in the ballpark.

quoted from the TE website:

Yes, the TE scholarships are limited. That’s one reason he applied to Gonzaga and Syracuse. Based on feedback I have received, they tend to admit a higher number of TE students. There are many schools on the list that accept very few. if any, students, which is why he applied to some other schools not on the list. I hate to force him to go to a school just because they are on the list and have open spaces.

mommdc- He did mention Pitt. I’m not sure how many spots they have. I called one school and they offer two spots for over 100 applicants!

What about Boston Univ? They must exchange out many students with such a big faculty?

Of schools that have a high % of offers extended (60-90%) for the exchange:

Mt Holyoke (MA)
Skidmore (NY)
Goucher (MD)
Marlboro (VT)
Beloit (WI)

Very helpful, HRSMom- thank you!

Of those that give all:

Milsaps (MS)
Manhattanville (NY)
St. Johns (NY)
Syracuse
Hiram (OH)
Ohio Wesleyan
Bennington (VT)

lot of cool LACs on the list!

^Mount Holyoke- OP has a son

Yes, the list has LOTS of great schools- it’s overwhelming! I really think he would like Syracuse if he can handle the weather.

Ah thats right! no boys!

The weather is something you get used to, trust me. Plus he can tell stories for the rest of his life about it! I do!

I went to St. Bonaventure (NY) about 20 years ago and loved it. Basketball is huge there. My room mate was there through tuition exchange (she had a parent that worked at Syracuse).

Gonzaga is fabulous school. The weather will not be nearly what he might see in Syracuse. We know tons (and tons and tons lol) of happy kids and alums. Very very popular choice for Seattle area kids and they manage the weather just fine. Granted they aren’t from the south but I head over there every November and Feb for events and it’s never been an issue, although I do generally fly in the winter.

Basketball is obviously huge there but it is also very solid academics and an overall great culture. He should have gotten a nice merit offer from them as well.

Yes, I have heard nothing but wonderful things about Gonzaga. We are still waiting to hear from them. He wants to get “away” from NC and you can’t get much further away than Spokane  And he LOVES basketball so that would be a definite plus as a Zag!

I’m new to this site but I really appreciate all the insight. VERY helpful advice!

Fall and Winter in Spokane is lovely weather wise and summers are quite warm. Spring will also come earlier I think than it would in Syracuse lol. I would expect a nice merit offer. Have you visited yet?

Why does he want to leave NC when there are excellent, affordable in-state public options?

If he likes basketball, then KANSAS!

Great question, LBad96. Unless he gets into UNC, he is set on leaving the state. Maybe to get as far away from his brothers and parents as possible
