Self-Contained Urban Campuses

Yes - while BU certainly is urban, I would have not thought of it as “self contained”.

In that sense NYU is “self contained”, because it actually has two gated alleys (Washington Mews and MacDougal).

On the other hand, yes, NEU does have a campus feel.

What about UPenn?

Carnegie Mellon is a self contained campus in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. It is surrounded by a residential neighborhood, shopping, and Shenley Park. The University of Pittsburgh is just down the street.

Similarly, Case is a self contained campus in Cleveland, though University Hospital bisects the campus.

I agree that U of Minnesota, Wash U and Rice might all meet that citeria. We were just at Rice last weekend and were commenting how pretty and “contained” it felt despite being smack in the middle of a city.
