Is it possible to self study AP Music theory with a prep book?

I took an AP Music Theory class my sophomore year but my teacher literally taught us NOTHING, so I learned all of the AP stuff from the Barron’s book and took all of the tests on the CDs. But I’ve also been playing the violin for 10 years and taken a couple of theory classes (I ended up getting a 5)
If you’re self-studying, you really have to commit. Even if you’ve been playing your instrument for a while and have taken theory courses, you need to learn everything in AP style - the terminology, the composition rules, the specific names for cadences, etc.
It will definitely be challenging, but if you’re up for it, then go for it.

Yes, it is. Our class actually used Barron’s as a textbook this year and it was amazing. Just make sure to use all of the CDs and to study diligently.

I got a 4 this year using the same book. I suggest getting a few voice lessons, just to help pass the sight singing portion. If you do not know how to read piano music, I suggest you learn. Seeing everything laid out on a piano makes it much easier in addition to your primary instrument.
