<p>So if I do my own thing and miraculously score a 5, would it be not be counted as credit because of no labwork? That's the interpretation I got from several posts here.</p>

I doubt that colleges would discredit your time and effort if you got a 5 on any AP test without taking the class.
I was planning on self-studying AP Chem (well, I guess not a COMPLETE self-study since I’m taking regular chem in school), so I’m in the same boat as you.</p>
<p>I have never seen on anything where they asked what you did in the class in addition to the actual score. It seems as if your score is all that counts when it comes to getting credit. Same goes for CLEP.</p>
<p>Check the policies of the colleges you’re interested in. Sometimes you can test out of the class part, but you’ll still have to take the lab portion of the class once or twice a week or whatever for a semester in order to ensure that you have the lab experience one would normally get from an intro to chem class. To get out of THAT, you have to have proof of previous lab experience at some schools. That’s how my AP Chem teacher explained it last year, anyway.</p>
