Sending additional material to schools

Yeah totally! That'd be great, I'm sure they'd appreciate it.

Wow, you hear a lot of kids that love to play the games but not too many that create them. I would definitely send it in if I were you.

Hey, I'm a new member...what do you think my chances of getting in ANY college at all?! =(

Sat Scores
CR-420
M-390
W-430

Gpa- 4.0 unweighted and weighted 4.0

Took all honors classes and 2 AP
Lots of extracurricular activities and leadership positions
Many community service hours as well!

PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Thanks photoop and Mmoynan,

Yeah DS is really into the whole thing and has even seriously considered designing video games as a career. There are a few colleges who have started to offer video game design as a major! It also ties in with the programming he does for robotics / lego league competitions. I asked him about it and he is already excitedly making a CD of the two games he has created so we can copy it and send it in to the schools! LOL

It sounds to me like you have found your son's "hook." I can't wait to hear where he ends up.

PA-C: Me neither! Your S's strength is pretty interesting and impressive! =)
Wait... Where is your S applying to btw? I'm pretty interested...

Hi Binhnguyen and Photo Op,

He's applying to Andover, Exeter, Derryfield (day only), Middlesex and possibly NMH too. Althought I am getting a little depressed about the acceptance rates at most of these schools right now! Maybe it's the holiday blues! LOL

I'm not sure it's really a hook because there are camps kids can go to where they do that sort of thing- that's where he did it... It is a challenging camp but it's not super unique since there were about 30 kids there. His was the best game at the presentations though but the adcom won't know that...

Not sure what to do. Right now we are just finishing apps and hoping for the best I guess. :)

Tell the adcom his was the best. And a camp with 30 kids is pretty unique - besides, it's now your job to make it sound unique!

To tell the adcom that his was the best, your son can either write about it in one of his essays, or you can write about it in your parent form, or you can also send a letter with this information.

Yeah, I agree PhotoOp. You still have room to 'brag' per se... if you haven't sent in everything, than I bet you could incorporate it in somehow.

GemmaV: Just asking, if I did go to CTY but asked my instructor to write me a personal recommendation, could I hand that in then? The transcript everyone receives after CTY is totally useless- just a summary of the course and a really pleasant description of what you did- I know; however, this personal recommendation was written quite well but I don't know which form I should attach it to. The student statements?

Additional personal recommendations can just come on the recommender's own stationery; no need to attach it to any special form. Just make sure it clearly says your name on it, and your address if you have a common-sounding name.

My son sent in "extra" info -- resume, copy of a newspaper article highlighting a huge community service project that he was involved in, essays he wrote for a scholarship he applied for, an additional essay and a few other items. Some of this was sent with the application and some after -- as he earned awards.

The key to doing this is to do it well -- the information should not repeat what has already been stated unless there is a particular reason. In other words, if you listed a "Math Counts" award on the resume -- don't send in the certificate. However, if your student participated in a unique math competition and was in the local newspaper, that might be enough additional info to merit sending it in. Don't send in extra rec letters unless they tell something new and different from previous ones.

The key is to make sure the admin people know who your student is -- but don't overwhelm them with repeat info. You want them to look at what you send and not just file it.
