^^ooh, Archiemom, I’d be a wreck although I do understand the odds that something not good will happen are slim. I’m already a wreck sending this stuff to who knows where. My husband had identiy theft five years ago and it was no fun sorting that out. Some chick in NYC was using my 80 year old mom’s social security number to years ago and my mom about had a nervous breakdown when an FBI agent called her out of the blue. It’s a huge concern these days and should be for everyone. I’m pretty comfortable with FAFSA, but this time with S2 I’ve had to work with CSS and I’m not comfortable at all that our information is private and safe despite the blah, blah, blah on the website and the idea that some office is taking our tax returns and dumping them into an in-basket makes me absolutely crazy. I sure hope like crazy colleges shred that stuff ASAP.

When we’re sending copies of tax returns and w2’s, should we make sure we send it with a verification with the UPS so we know when/if the document is received? Or do most people send there’s in the typical manilla envelope?

^^That would be a good idea^^ although, in our case we never actually received the confirmation that we paid for. For a second document mailing I used the USPS Priority Mail envelopes figuring that they might get better attention than my own white envelope with certified mail sticker attached.

For IDOC, I just sent it in a manila envelope - no confirmation or anything. I checked IDOC’s system and apparently it arrived and was recorded in their system - big sigh of relief there. Now I just have one more school that needs them, and they said I could wait until after we get an admission letter (a refreshing bit of sanity).

Oh, that would be nice. Can you e-mail the schools and ask if they can hold off until we find out admissions decisions?

Yes - at least that’s what I did for one school. They replied promptly and said wait until afteradmission …

^^that makes so much sense to me. I don’t understand why they would “need” the tax forms, W-2s, 1099s and all that “stuff” until the student is accepted since the tax forms simply verify the information in the FAFSA and CSS. If they accept a student they have 3 months before you write the check to verify your financials and adjust the finaid if you weren’t honest which is really the “ONLY” reason they would need tax forms, otherwise everything is there in the CSS in B/W. One of my son’s schools on CSS says to send tax forms and I’ve been dragging my feet simply because I don’t see the point right now since we don’t even know if he’s been accepted and I don’t like the idea of that paperwork sitting in someone’s in-basket. I guess I’ll send them an e-mail and find out if it’s a college board “thing” and if they really need them…
