Hey everyone! I'm a junior that is going to apply to the UW next year from OOS (suburbs of Charlotte, NC). We are signing up for classes next year and I was wondering if this looked lke a challenging schedule (the AP Companion courses are mandatory)?

AP English Lit.
Honors English Lit. Companion Course
AP Statistics
Honors Statistics Companion Course
AP Macroeconomics
French 4 Honors
Class Piano CP(This is my art class to graduate)
Honors Marine Science

I was unsure about the Marine Science instead of Honors Physics but I'm not very math strong and figured I would be busy with Statistics. I took two AP classes this year (English & U.S. Gov) and have a 3.9 GPA with a lot of honors classes. My class rank is currently 77 out of 350 (top 22%). I know this isn't very high, but I go to the number one school academically in the state so it is super competitive and the classes are challenging. If it helps to list my schedule from freshman, sophmore and junior year let me know. Any comments?

Do you have the required years of lab sciences? If so, go have fun with Marine Science! Otherwise, you’d need Honors Physics to satisfy “lab science” requirements (bio, chem, phys) to apply to colleges.

What type of major are you considering? If you’re considering engineering, you might as well get some sort of physics under your belt before college as an intro class. Also, I didn’t feel that AP Stats was a lot of work, but it really varies from school to school. A lot of people who weren’t strong with math took AP Stats instead of AP Calc or even PreCalc for their senior year math because it was “easier.” Talk to the upperclassmen about the course load and see if you can take a look at what type of homework they have.

As far as sciences in high school, I took Earth Science CP freshman year, Honors Biology Sophmore year, and I’m in Honors Chemistry right now(borderline with an A b/c NC is on a seven point grading system & i got a 93 first marking period). I know Chemistry and Biology are lab sciences and Marine Science definitely is as well. I know a third lab science is required but do colleges really want to see physics? For example, like they want to see a third foreign language course? We only have one Statistics teacher at our school and apparently he gives a ton of work and isn’t the best at teaching the material. I just took Pre-Cal this year so I’m definitely taking Stat next year. I want double major in Communications and get a basic BA in music for guitar.

Colleges don’t care which lab science you take unless you’re going into engineering, which you aren’t. Stick with Marine Science! It sounds like that course load will be more doable. :)

Thanks speedsolver! One more question. Are you a student at the UW? I was just wondering how the indie/rock music scene is there? I know Seattle itself is great for music but liek places around campus and such. Are student bands existent, etc. Thanks!

Yes, I am a student.

There are student bands. I don’t know that much about indie/rock music scene though. I’m going to PM you a place where you could ask for information from people who would know more than me :)
