The --- demise of the protagonist in the final scence of the movie ---- all possibility of a sequel.

a. catastrophic...beguiled
b. lamentable..obviated
c. benficent..raised
d. ironic..exacerbated
e. temporary..precluded

I eliminated the choices down to A and B. The answer is B but I didn't know that the definition of beguiled so I thought that the answer was A. Any advice on how to approach situations like this when you're down to 2 answer choices but u don't know the meaning of some words? Thanks

Well, the purpose of the sentence completion section is to test your vocabulary, so don’t be surprised if you have to guess when you don’t know more than one of the words.

However, you can try to look for prefixes and suffixes to help you guess the definition of a word. Also, try to think of similar sounding words.

For obviate, think of words like vitiate and obliterate. They are similar in meaning to obviate.

There aren’t many words similar to beguiled, however, if you can find out what obviate means, it wouldn’t matter whether you know what beguiled means.

for me i was going between B and D but then i was like it cant be ironic
as for beguiled its just vocab but i would’ve guessed B because “obviated” looks like “obvious” and i kinda knew what beguiled meant which i think iss like to hurt insidiuosly or to influence w/ deceit

The word “guile” helps with beguiled. “Obviated” and “obvious” are not really close in meaning, despite the similarity in form. “Obviated” means rendered impossible or moot. (Probably from the Latin “ob” = against + “via” = way–so, the way is blocked.)
