If your mother is having the document notarized, write it in her voice. “My name is Jane Doe. I was married to John Doe on XXX but we have been separated since XXX. I moved with my child, Little Jane, to this address on XXX. John has never lived here. To the best of my knowledge he lives in ___ but I have no contact with him. He provides no support for Little Jane.”
Just pack it full of whatever info your mother knows.
And mom says she had not had contact with him in x years, since ___, has no idea where he is, does not know anyone who does. The things you told us. That she is your sole support, etc. If she doesn’t know where he is, she shouldn’t guess. (!)
Don’t confuse the college. It’s trying to understand. Just providing piecemeal info only prolongs.
Your HS GC probably had her name only on your records, right? Call the hs. Get this done. Get a note from the doc, sure. But get this done.
If your mother has a bank they usually have a notary in the office that will notarize for free. A notary is certifying that the signature on the letter is authentic. They have nothing to do with the letter’s content. Your mother will need a picture i.d. card.
Update: Unfortunately the letter was not enough and the lady I spoke to on the phone today said the lease agreement I sent was no good because it was from 2011, but that is when we moved here so I don’t know why it would say 2015. Also, she said that I have to get something from the court saying that they are legally separated. This is all really stressing me out and I don’t know what to do. I don’t know any lawyers, and I really wish my parents decided to get legally separated just so this could all be so much easier.
But I have already sent them the tax stuff from my mother. Basically she said that my parents need to separate… Let’s say everything does go right, will I have to go through this every year that I apply for FAFSA??
