So i'm deciding where I should go between USC, UVA and UIUC (in-state) for EE major. I recently visited USC and really liked the campus but I still have a couple of questions

1) When we asked about campus security, our tour guide just said use common sense and she wouldn't go out during the night by herself in any major metropolitan city which got me skeptical of the surrounding. Is it really that unsafe that I won't be able to go out at night (even though i don't have a car) with other people.

2) What is there to do around USC?

3) How easy will an out of state student fit in because students going to USC tend to know each other b/c of hs affiliations.

1) You misunderstood her. When at USC you basically should follow the rules of be aware of your surroundings and to not go out by yourself at night. By yourself. You'll be fine (often by yourself, though I wouldn't recommend it) with other people. It's true that really you shouldn't go out by yourself at night no matter where you are. That's just a good rule to follow in general. It's definitely not that bad around here.

2) Well, in the immediate vicinity there is: University Village (which has random little shops in it), lots of food places (fast food, Starbucks, pretty much every type of food), movie theater, the Row (where the Greek houses are, which equals parties), the Coliseum (where our football games are), the 901 Club (right by USC, not the prettiest place, but students love it), and museums. We are also just a short drive from anywhere in L.A., from beaches, to shopping, to clubs.

3) You don't have to worry AT ALL about not being from California. I think somewhere near 50% of students aren't from California. On my floor alone last year there was someone from Illinois, Massachusetts, Hawaii, Oregon, Wisconsin, Michigan, and four from Texas.

I only knew of 2 people coming in here, so don't worry about affiliations. Everyone is very open, and love to meet new people. You will fit in perfectly.

Forget UVA. I'm in-state at UVA and their Engineering program isn't the best one around. I've been in both UVA's and USC's engineering facilities and USC's is so much newer, more up-to-date, and hands down better. I'm not saying UVA is bad, but it's not worth it for Engineering. Besides, you're instate for UIUC. That is a much better Engineering school than UVA too. It's not worth your money going to Charlottesville.
