Serious Math Help. Scores low

I'm a high school junior and every time I've taken practice PSATs and SATs at school I've gotten 80 (800) Critical Reading, Writing 80 (800), and around a 45 in Math. I literally have no idea how to improve the math, and I take the PSAT Wednesday so any last minute help for that would be appreciated. Sorry, this is my first post on here.

Wow, awesome scores in Critical Reading and Writing! Hmm… if you’re taking PSAT on Wednesday, I don’t know if you can drastically improve your math score by then… except to keep doing the practice math questions.

I don’t even need to drastically improve them, the National Merit cutoff in my state is 210. I’ve gone to math tutoring after school a few times, and the scores have improved, my highest math score was a 58. I was just wondering how I can sharpen up a bit before Wednesday as my scores have been all over the place.

I understand your pain sooo much. I got a 760 on my CR and a 780 on my Writing…and a 570 on my Math lol.

I’m sorry to say it, but seriously the only way to improve is to practice. Which section do you have the most trouble with (for me, it was Geometry). You HAVE to focus, focus, focus until you understand that concept behind the problem. Get people to tutor you, do whatever it takes. I’m sorry to say it though, but it’s doubtful you’ll be able to get your score up significantly by Wednesday. But don’t worry too much about it…it’s just the PSAT.

Good luck!

One last minute tip would be to become familiar with your calculator. If you have a more advanced calculator, you can do some problems with functions on the calculator. Other than that, it is a little late to do much studying, maybe just do a practice section or two to become even more familiar with the test format and style.

Woah. Those are some awesome scores you got there in CR and Writing (wish I got those scores too…) anyway, as mentioned above, some ways to improve the math score is to practice (practice makes perfect!) and to be patient. Understand why you made a mistake in an item. My strategy is to check the correct answer, then solve again until I get the same answer. It helps a lot (for me, at least)

On the other hand, alexbarkman, would you be kind enough to tell me some ways to improve my CR and Writing scores? :frowning: I desperately want to get higher scores.

I have some suggestion for you using which you can increase your score(it at least worked for me). You should solve as many maths questions as you can from different books and online course. As you already have great score in CR and Writing I must suggest you to concentrate only on the math section while practicing(but don’t ignore the other two). As you will practice you would yourself device some technique and strategy to tackle the test. I solved more than 20 SAT practice test(of which only maths section) and I increased my math score from 540 when I first gave SAT to 800 when I last appeared for it. I hope this would have helped you.

Practice, practice, practice! In most cases, it’s not the content that’s the issue; it’s learning to work around the content correctly in a short period of time.

If all else fails, breathe. I got an 800 in CW but a 660 in Math, and I’m still up for full rides at all of my safety schools by merit of my score - it’s not the end of the world. :)

Thanks. I took it today an the math was fine. Working problems especially helped
