Service gap year

My son is considering a gap year after verifying with his school that his place and scholarship could be help for a year. He would be up for anything, loves to travel and has no problem making friends. He’s proven he can be away from home for long stretches (spent last summer in China learning Mandarin with NSLIY). Obviously we’re getting a late start and some programs may be in limbo. Any direction would be appreciated.

We are in the same position; if you want to share any leads/thoughts with me I’d be happy to do the same. He is still trying to decide but doesn’t want to waste 1/4 of college on an online substitute after working so very hard to get there…what is your son interested in?

serviceyear.org and wwoof.net are two sites that he looked into today,

I’m guessing a lot of the opportunities listed on serviceyear.org have been shut down due to covid but wwoof is a really interesting concept.

My son is going to major in finance/Chinese. He’s into travel, languages, cultures, gaming, documentaries, politics, etc. He really hates online learning, at least how it’s currently being handled by his high school. How about your son?

Given that the COVID-19 situation is likely to be with us for at least another year, I would encourage your son to focus on places where he can provide service locally. When the second/third/fourth waves hit, both you and he might prefer that he is closer to you in a lock-down.

That said, the WWOOFers I’ve known had noting but positive things to report about their experiences.
