Hi
Trying to find a service trip for my 16 year old DS this summer. I was hoping to find one that would help the Hurricane Harvey hit areas- Houston or Puerto Rico but I can not find any programs that allows indivuals to volunteer under 18. Any ideas?
Thanks
Sorry, I know this isn’t helpful for now, but looking ahead, the service trips accessible to our hs students were sponsored/organized by the high school and planning/registering was done the previous summer and latest early fall. So well ahead of going. They offered several options in and out of country. You may need to look more locally at this point? Maybe others have more first hand experience with those locations.
Ask around to your local church groups. At least in my area, they will take any willing person with them.
I am only familiar with faith/ church based humanitarian trips but if travel isn’t essential every community has non- profits that have volunteer opportunities.
16 yr olds are a liability so look nearer home, MDA runs summer camps that might take a 16 yr old. Check your states MDA site. Your own locale will have families in need, try volunteermatch.
Try heartworkcamp.com- they may still have some openings.
You could also ask at the senior center if there is a group that does renovations/small repairs for seniors in need. It’s not as sexy as an overseas mission trip, but it’s just as necessary and helps at home.
Many of the churches in this area do service projects in the summer…home renovations sort of like Habitat.
Why do you want a service “trip”? There has to be something local available.
If not…maybe your kid could start something.
All three of my kids went on 1 or more trips and loved them.
