My application is pretty much ready for applying this fall (and by this I mean that I have all my extracurriculars, leadership positions, teacher recommendations ready, ACT score above average for where I want to apply) except for one thing: I’m lacking in the service department, I think. I’m part of my school’s NHS chapter and volunteer around 6 hours a week to playing in my church’s band, but as the first one isn’t very specialized and I’m not sure if the second one could be considered service/volunteering, I planned to start volunteering for one local organization consistently in the second semester of my junior year.
I attended a training so I could volunteer to register voters, but soon after that, COVID hit and I wasn’t able to do anything else. I’m worried I won’t be able to volunteer anywhere for long enough to be seen as consistent in the timespan between the end of this COVID wave and the application period for this fall.
Any tips for service organizations that accept volunteering from home, or ideas for how to serve from home? I’m interested in anything other than writing cards.
Lots of colleges say they will be reviewing applications with COVID in mind, but in my mind, a student who found ways to volunteer during quarantine will still be regarded more highly than a student who did nothing during quarantine (which is what I’m currently doing).
