alright people, this is my first here so I need your feedback please
I am an international student, and I currently got accepted in Pace and Seton Hall, pending Baruch (my interview is next week) and Rutgers
to be honest looking at the cost, Rutgers is very expensive compared to the other three.
for Baruch, the process is very long, I still have to apply for the visa and work on my papers, which is a lengthy process
currently I got accepted in Pace, Seton Hall and Fairleigh Dickinson. i’m between pace and seton hall, i wanted to hear your recommendations…which school offers better internships and has a better name in NY/NJ area
guys Help!! share your thoughts
What are your goals? An MBA program is one of those programs for which you spend more to gain more. Going to a better-ranked MBA program increases your chances of getting a good job at a great company making enough money to repay the debt you’ve taken on.
Rutgers has a 98% employment rate within 3 months of graduation and Rutgers grads have an average starting salary of between $92,000 and $106,000 a year (it’s reported differently on different areas of their website - a press release has the higher figure, whereas their tables have the lower one). Their top recruiters are big name companies. It’s a top 50 MBA program. It’s probably the best one on your list, and I’d consider it even though it’s the most expensive because the return on your investment will probably be great.
Baruch is another good choice. It’s well known and well-respected in NY, and will have the most local connections because of its location and reputation in the area. It’s also pretty cheap for a nonresident student. 91% of their Class of 2015 MBA graduates were employed within 3 months of graduation (however, that percentage drops to 70% for international students). Average salary was around $67,000 for international students - so lower, but your debt is also lower.
Neither Pace or Seton Hall have very well-reputed MBA programs. It’s not that they are necessarily bad; it’s just that there’s really nothing to recommend them either. According to US News’ data, only 59% of Pace MBA graduates are employed at graduation and they make on average $62,000 a year to start, which seems pretty low relative to the amount of money you’ll spend on tuition and fees (not to mention living expenses). It’s particularly egregious when you consider the fact that the Pace MBA is designed to be a flexible degree that both working professionals and full-time students can attend - so when you account for all of the students who already had jobs at the beginning of the MBA who kept their jobs throughout, the 59% figure seems even lower.
Seton Hall either doesn’t collect that information or doesn’t release it to U.S. News. It’s not on their website, either - in fact, their website has nothing about post-graduation outcomes on it, which I consider a red flag.
So honestly, I would pay for the Rutgers name - your average starting salary and connections will be so much better, and since your salary throughout your career is partially based on where you start that’ll make a difference for a long time. But if you had to choose between the other two, then I would go with Pace because of the location in New York - and then beat the pavement yourself looking for jobs.
thanks a lot Juillet. I’ve been in this dilemma the past week, especially that I got accepted at Rutgers, but including the summer school. they want me to start earlier thanks to my Gmat score. they basically loved my work experience in Oman, Qatar and United Arab emirates. but they are worried from my academic. I am grateful that they looked at the whole profile and did not base their decision on one piece of the puzzle, Gmat score. leaving my current job 1 month earlier than I expected and adding the cost of summer course, not to forget living expenses as well, added a lot of financial pressure on me.
so I was between going to a school with no financial issues or going to a good school but ofcourse being in debt from day one :D.
your reply is exactly what I needed to read today. you are 100% right. Seton hall and Pace are out of the picture. I guess i’ll hear back from Baruch today. if I got accepted (fingers crossed) I will have to decide between a program that is very expensive but with better ROI (Rutgers). or a program that is affordable, strong but I have to take an extra mile on networking and building connections to get a good job post to my graduate degree (Baruch)
