Sewanee Engineering - then Vanderbilt?

I'm looking for in-reach schools and I noticed that Sewanee (University of the South) works with Vanderbilt (my top choice school) and other universities for their engineering program. Would it be worth it to go into Sewanee's engineering department to then go to the 2-year engineering school in Vandy for mech. engineering? Just wondering.

Also, if my family is only making $30k right now because my dad lost his job, will that allow me to get a large amount of FA? I'm relying on scholarships and FA to get me into the schools I want to go to.

My S is thinking about the 3-2 Engineering too. He’ll be entering Sewanee this fall. Not much I can tell you about it right now. Maybe after he’s spoken to an advisor I can get back to you.
As far as financial aid and scholarships, Sewanee is very fair. My only suggestion is for you to apply and see what happens. What I think I understand with the 3-2 programs and financial aid though, is that what you get at the engineering school will not be the same as the LAC that you’re transferring from. So you have to keep that in mind.
I think the 3-2 programs might be better for students who are not quite sure that Engineering is what they want to major in. But that’s just my opinion.

That would be great if you could get back to me on that. I would love to know from your S what it’s like with Sewanee. Thank you :)

It will definitely be my pleasure to keep you posted.

Agree with Mom0809 that 3/2 is for students who are not sure engineering is for them. If you are sure about eng’g then go to an eng’g school. Some schools with good eng’g programs and about the same acceptance criteria as Sewanee include Purdue, Rose Hulman, Clemson, Va. Tech, and Auburn.

If you are not sure about engineering, then major in what you love and then go to an eng school for a masters. My oldest son loves math and physics and he plans to double major and then perhaps go to eng’g school for a masters.

Sewanee is a great choice. My daughter, who is a rising senior in NOVA, plans to apply there and loves the English program. She will also apply to Vandy, which we have visited and is also great. Good luck!
