EEWWW. This is getting a bit too graphic folks, IMO. Even the students thread on the NW forum isnt this… umm…direct. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/northwestern-university/1096774-michael-baileys-campus-class-demonstration.html

A day late and a dollar short. Get him out of there. Maybe he can think of a reason now, to say NOOOO!

[Northwestern sex prof apologizes for after-class sex demo - Chicago Sun-Times](http://www.suntimes.com/4150853-417/northwestern-sex-prof-apologizes-for-after-class-sex-demo.html)

And yet… tenure.

Maybe the professor will ask for volunteers next time for a demonstration of, let’s say, a female student giving the professor a blow job. Or maybe a male student peforming anal sex with another student? Or, maybe they could get a train going using every available orifice. As long as everyone is volunteering and they either talk about it or study it, it can be considered educational, right? Or they could uses bananas next time and then serve them to the audience as refreshments afterwards. Anything goes in the name of artisitic and educational freedom!

This is 100% offensive, shocking and devoid of educational value. If it had been a stunt it would be more acceptable as the behavior of a professor who is off his rocker. That he is able to defend his actions with a straight face is just plain disturbing. I am astounded that anyone at the university or on this board could think otherwise! if my kid were a student at this school, I’d be burning up the phone lines.

jeez baseballmom - just when I thought this thread could not get any grosser.

swimcatsmom… I guess I got carried away making my point. :)

This was the first class in the history of the Big 10 that should have had a 2-drink minimum.

I sure hope the students who watched practiced safe viewership (i.e., came equipped with goggles and plastic tarps like they were sitting in the first row at a Gallagher performance).

I heard that the woman who participated was insulted when the head of the geology department asked her to give a similar demonstration to a graduate seminar on spelunking.

I don’t know why i keep clicking on the thread. Just interested to see peoples reactions I guess - I don’t generally think of myself as narrow minded but apparently I am more so than I realized. I am quite appalled by the whole story.

Maybe I’m like (some of) those students that day - horrified but can’t look away.

As a student at NU, I can tell you it really isn’t a big deal. Most people just think its funny (primarily for the name of the instrument used), and it isn’t something that people are actively arguing about. There’s even a live petition supporting him.

If you read Baily’s statement, the reason he said he couldn’t think of a reason to say “no” was because he dislikes the moral taboo we have against sex and wants to break it down. Those of you complaining that he should be jailed/fired/etc. are the types of people Bailey is trying to not educate for the future – where sex isn’t something we have to talk about under whispers with blindfolds on.

You all will forget about this in 3 weeks. I agree with fellow 'Cat Pizzagirl to some degree – the only reason I disapprove of with this event is the fact that it may hurt the reputation of the university because some people think there is a huge difference between a video and the real thing.

Baseballmom, have you considered a part-time career writing scripts for the porn industry?

^LOL!!! i’m laughing so hard that H is wondering what’s going on, but i don’t think i should tell him…

sounds like the professor was blind sided by 2 people who had some fetishes and he didn’t have the courage to just say no…or maybe he wanted to watch himself. The demonstrators look like 2 losers…

No, but I did receive an offer from Northwestern to rewrite a couple of course descriptions for the 2012 catalog.

That is a good point. I didn’t realize that it was such a large class. In that setting, it would be a lot less conspicuous to leave.

Still, it’s the question of the authority figure, not the peer pressure. I believe that a college student is going to have a lot more sex-related peer pressure to deal with than the question of a demonstration in a classroom.

@mntmama

LOL amen.

I believe the analogy rests on the following similarity: we all need to have sex and poop, or at least, we all want to, or at least… the vast majority of us do… but not many of us would like to see other people do it live, in person, sitting in front of our professor and our classmates. Certain sights and smells are somehow different when coming from strangers. Sorry.

Wow. Someone should inform him it’s not only a moral taboo. There are taboos in most societies against acts that produce bodily fluids, other than fairly sterile ones like tears and breastmilk, being performed in public. I do not CARE if anyone has sex with a saw. I do CARE if it is done in a live auditorium for the purpose of demonstrating ejaculation of said bodily fluids. I also care if it is done for no purpose whatsoever, other than to titillate the students and fulfill this woman’s need (as she is not a student). I think it cheapens the sex act. But I view that as something personal and sacred, no matter how many power tools or partners you have.

So many great things going on on the Northwestern campus - take a look at the video of the annual NU Dance Marathon live now - 900 students dancing 30 hours for charity. www.nudm.org

This is just three wierd adults trying to shock some kids. Howard Stern does this every day, just not in the name of Northwestern University. Baily’s pretending it has anything to do with academics is just a yank of your chain.

What??? There is a “moral taboo” against sex nowadays? You have got to be kidding. This is the porn generation, for those who somehow didn’t notice.

Nice try, jrpar. I really wish people would pay attention to the thousands of other wonderful things going on at Northwestern.

The Northwestern annual Dance Marathon raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity.

Go Dance Marathon! (One of my first dates with H. H was the food chairman one year, and some other leadership position some other year. S’s “Why NU” essay talked about how he looked forward to beating his father in raising money for DM.)

Findaplace, is your son one of the dancers?

I have not read this whole thread and would suppose that others have said similar things to what i am about to say. But here goes–

I went to a what was, and is considered now, a top LAC in the 70’s. I took a interdisciplinary human sexuality course. One part of the course was a visit from a doctor who performed transsexual operations and a movie that showed the whole procedure. This showed a man being turned into a woman. The movie (would now be called a video) showed a man’s sexual organ being cut off and the skin being used to make a female organ. Because this was so difficult to watch for many, it was not mandatory.

I also took an art class. It had something to do with viewers reaction to art or creating art that gets a reaction. I do not really remember the class. But I DO remember one of the exhibits. One of the students recorded the other students reaction to his movie. It was pornography showing someones hand up to their wrist going somewhere.

Are these things educational or serve some purpose. I say yes. Are they for everyone? Obviously, no. But some folks have to delve into the dark and dirty to learn things. It’s probably not appropriate for the freshman.
