My child is advised to apply to Ringling. Their art program seems good on the website.
But I am concerned that their academic requirements are pretty low - minimum GPA 2.0 and no SAT/ACT required.
My child is a GPA 4.0 student with high SAT/ACT scores. Her portfolio has received pretty good reviews so far.
Will she feel out of place there?
Can somebody share thoughts or experience for this art school?
Ringling is amazing. What major is your D applying for? My D graduated from the CA program a few years back.
She had two roommates in illustration.
I know colcon and phillymom had Ds who went into the illustration program and while not too active presently on this site you could PM them for info about Ringling experiences. Look up their profiles and old threads.
Ringling puts the emphasis on portfolio because that’s where the artists live. Art school is not for “I like art”, “it seems like fun”, “I like to color…”. A student needs to LOVE art, “this is all I want to do”, and “I love to color, paint, create new things 24/7” And be open to trying new things. The idea is that you come in as a budding artist and they hone the talent going from pretty good to hopefully great. That starts with fundamentals–figure drawing, perspective etc. It’s why companies love Ringling graduates–they are artists first.
The academic requirements are seemingly lower BECAUSE they are looking for artists and don’t want to turn down talent because they didn’t “get math”. High GPA and SATs doesn’t equal art talent nor love of art. That being said–an artist who is both smart academically and artistically talented is especially set to succeed.in the art world where you really need to be a self promoter and ready to learn business. The faculty is excellent–the smartest student will be open and try what is suggested.
“Will she feel out of place?”–I would hope not. Ringling was very welcoming. My D and friends “found their group”.They were “home” as artists.
As a parent who is science minded (so this was a new environment for me!) loved it too. And all the students I met were very bright articulate kids with a goal.
I did not realize that I got a response, so my apologies for late reply.
Thank you so much for such a through response!
It made me think that we need to visit the school to see how she feels.
Thanks!
