Share your experience: MEFA, EdAmerica, Sallie Mae, etc

I would like some input on the various funding agencies that are out there: who did you have a good or bad experience with? Who would you recommend? Who would you discourage using?

We are currently leaning towards taking a PLUS loan from MEFA (Massachusetts Education Financing Authority), but I would love it if someone who has used them could fill me in on whether they are a good company to work with.

I've got a PLUS loan with Sallie Mae but have not had any issues one way or another. Sallie Mae has a pretty good web site that allows for checking of loan status on line -- and there has never been an issue with processing of payments -- so it is just one of those creditors that simply doesn't give me any problem, so I don't give much thought to it other than sending the payment regularly. I've got things set up for automated payments, so there really is nothing for me to do other than to check from time to time to see what my outstanding balance is.

My son had some difficulty with them in terms of payments at first, but I honestly don't know whether that was his fault or theirs --he also gets hit with late fees on his credit card from time to time and gripes about it, but I think the problem is that he is careless about bills and simply is prone to missing payments or paying late. I encouraged him to set things up for automatic payment with Sallie Mae, and I think once that was done his problem with the late/missed payments went away.
