I have looked and looked at old posts, but I am having trouble finding all of the genereral "cold and sniffles" advice. And, with an audition looming, my D is taking Airborne, but feeling a cold coming on. Any tips will be greatly appreciated!

Does she have the personal steamer? A must.

I think Zicam works very well -- I take it in addition to the Airborne.

I second the zicam and airborn idea, lots of fluids, musinex (not with the D added) , sleep and of course the personal steamer is great. My S has been able to shorten and lessen colds this way many times.

It's just before 6 am, I am, of course, obsessing (and reading these tips!), and I'm on my way to walmart for Zicam, musinex, and I hope a steamer! She is using the humidifier.
THANKS!!!!!!!!

sarahlsmom, read the thread that Coach C started a few weeks ago about vocal health, too. She's a pro and knows what she is talking about! Good luck to your D!

Thanks. I did read the entire thing....even moved it up to a current post, because it is so good. But, for now, I think it is a cold and not something ENT worth. I'm pushing fluids, herb tea, zicam, airborne, zinc, and I found a steamer! Now, the only part left is to keep my fingers crossed!

quick note, anyone who is flying with a cold, should be very careful, my S flew in from NY with the start of a cold and was miserable, painful ears and sinuses. I have been told that taking an anihistamine before flying and maybe some ibuprophen can really help with the pressure problems you can get from flying with a cold. The downside is of course the drying affect they have along with the drying from the flight itself, lesser of two evils type of thing?

Make sure your D sleeps and rests her voice as much as possible. Steam steam steam!!! That can REALLY help. And make sure she's drinking a looooot of water - her urine should be clear (a sign of adequate hydration). If her voice changes into hoarseness, it is ENT worthy, esp. if she has demanding singing to do - let me know where you're located and I can refer you to the best person. :)

Re: flying with a cold- even better than an antihistamine (which is drying, and not necessarily decongesting) is a nasal spray like Afrin. This is addicting if overused, but this is one of those situations where it really is a good idea.

Good luck at Ithaca this weekend!!!! I hope she is feeling better.
