shell , BP, exxon

how is it like working in the oil industry? lots of travel opportunities? overseas? high pay?

as a 23 year geoscience professional/ manager I can tell you there are many ups and downs in the businees... but overall very rewarding.

I have lived and worked in California, Alaska, Russia, and Muscat, Oman. Now in Houston.

It is a fair but difficult to ask 'what is it like' ..think of a specific issue or two and i will try and go from there

compensation and the interest level u have in ur work

If that is a question (?) I will take it, compensation, good overall.... I make in salary and bonus about $200,00 per year with good stock and other apreciation benefits... varies greatly, if you are willing to take some risk with a smaller company --which I did, I have an additonal $3-4Million over 6 years with stock.

Entry level compensation for "Petro-Techs" Geology and Engineering --about $80,000 plus bonus target of 15% , plus some of the long term apprciation as noted.

High Job satisfaction among most I know, more later if interested

wow..$200,000!! How many year have you been working? Are you at mangerial level now? I am an EE student, how hard is it to get a entry-level job at shell, BP or Chevron?

BUMP for sure...200k? wow

Also, how are the opportunities for EEs? I would imagine most people are chemEs or something.

Yes that is compensation, now as with many indutries we had a down time- from about 1984 to early ninities and then again spoardically there have been downturns and layoffs. Right now is good, and frankly I believe for a number of years with the retirement of professionals and management from the last boom , many opportunites will be available.

As too how hard it is to get a job, right now with a 'good background many opportunites are available. Also look past the companies mentioned to the next tier of producers- ConocoPhillips, Occidental, Marathon, and the large independents Devon, Anadarko, and others, the service companies (Schlumberger, Baker Hughes, Halliburton). These are especially needy of EE, ME est...though the larger production companies also hire oter than Petroleum Engineers (PetE)...PetE schools are Texas, Oklahoma, Texas TM, Texas Tech, Colorado Sch Mines, Stanford, LSU, prob a few others

do remeber starting salaries are in the $80k range with benes and usually some bonus/stock compensation package depending on company
