Ship without a rudder

I need....er, some kind of help. I am going into my senior year of high school and it has been a train wreck. I have a 1.9 GPA and I was sweating it out the last day of the year because I had to pass classes with exams. I think I got a 17 or 18 on my ACT and I think that was my best effort.

I've been pretty terrible my whole life in school. Even when I put in 100% I'm B- at best. I have no clue where I'm headed after high school ends for me. Major university is pretty much out the window right now with that horrendous GPA of mine so I know I'm going to "start" at a community college. But where do I go from there?

Part of the problem I guess is I'm not too sure what I want to do. First it was web design and then I took a class this past year that sucked and turned me off of it. Now it is graphic design but I have people like parents putting doubt in my mind with it being a tight job market and people not getting paid well.

My school counselor is useless. Absolutely useless. I've tried to talk a few times to him and every time I made an appointment I never heard anything back.

I'd be the first in my immediate family to go to college or get any post-high school education if that helps. The only schools I'm hearing anything from are ones like local schools which are out of my league and what I call "pitty schools". The ones I listed I had interest in on my ACT. Pretty much all of them I have no chance of getting into or paying for (Michigan, Alaska-Fairbanks, Alaska-Anchorage, Auburn).

I'm just clueless right now really. People are all off taking visits and I'm just sitting here scratching my head.

“I know I’m going to “start” at a community college. But where do I go from there?”

You start with the Transfer Advisor at your CC. That person can tell you where students who have entered with your HS GPA and ACT scores have ended up. The Transfer Advisor will be able to help you plan your course of studies so that you are ready to go wherever it is that you want to go after you finish at the CC.

Your GPA and your comments about how hard you have to work in order to get a B make me wonder if you have any unidentified learning disabilities. Make an appointment with your guidance counselor and the resource team at your school so that you can set up formal screening. Why they haven’t done this yet given your GPA is beyond me. If you have an LD, the resource team at your HS can help you start improving your study skills so that you can do better in college.
