Has anyone else heard about the shooting at Kirkland today??? My son just called and said that he received a text from the school letting the students know of the shooting, but his connection dropped and he didn't get the whole text.

Harvard students were warned of a report of a shooting this afternoon near Kirkland House, one of 12 undergraduate houses on the Cambridge university’s campus.

The Cambridge and Harvard police departments are on the scene, searching for an assailant, according to a message sent to the Harvard students. University officials asked students to remain where they are and report unusual or suspicious activities to the Harvard Police Department.

The Harvard Crimson, citing an eyewitness who attends Harvard Dental School, said a person who appeared to be college-aged, had been shot. The victim was bleeding but conscious when emergency responders arrived. The shooting allegedly occurred in the entrance to Kirkland Hall.

Here are statements that the university sent to faculty, students, and staff:

5:50 p.m.: At approximately 5:00 pm this afternoon there was a report of a shooting in the vicinity of Kirkland House. The Cambridge and Harvard University police departments are on the scene and actively searching the area for the alleged assailants, but for now, we ask that people in the general vicinity proceed indoors and immediately report any unusual or suspicious activities to the Harvard University Police Department at 617-495-1212.

6:02 p.m.: HUPD has authorized people outside the Eliot-Kirkland area to resume normal activity. Those in the area should await further instruction. Any unusual or suspicious activity should be reported to the Harvard University Police Department at 617-495-1212.

Has anyone received any info on the shooting today at Kirkland house? my son received several texts from the school advising that Kirkland and another house is on lockdown. Annenberg was locked down for a short time today while my son was having dinner.

For what it’s worth, I’m a student in Kirkland (who fortunately wasn’t involved), and while there were many police officers outside Kirkland a few minutes ago, and what appeared to be news helicopters, the situation didn’t seem dangerous.

Another text was sent at 6:59 saying that the HUPD believed the assailants had left the area and that it is safe to resume normal activities. (Just for the sake of any worried parents!)

Incidentally, the email from the Masters and most news reports said that the shooting occured in J-entryway (and while I’ve seen it mentioned in the news, I’ve yet to figure out what “Kirkland Hall” means).

I spoke with my DD, who lives in Kirkland, about an hour ago. The shooting happened while she was taking a final exam, and she noted that something was wrong on her way back to Kirkland because of the heavy police presence and the yellow police tape. She was relieved that her roomies were OK and not involved in this unfortunate event.

DD said that things are back to normal in the part of Kirkland that she lives in. She had no information regarding the person who was shot, or the perpetrator and said that there was a dearth of information regarding what had happened. The entryway where she lives is not locked down and students are free to come/go as they wish at this point.

D just found an e-mail alert about the shooting. It referred to the shooting as a recent event yet the time stamp was 8:07 PM. Hopefully current students received their alerts in a more timely manner.

While I was cooling off outside my dorm after a run, the security guard walking around told me that current news on the street is that the person who was shot was not a Harvard student. I’m not sure how reliable that it, but I was surprised to hear that.

"An unidentified man was shot sometime before 5 p.m. Monday in the basement of J-Entry of Kirkland House, in what House Master Tom Conley called “in most likelihood, a targeted shooting.”

I don’t believe the alert was “timely”. The first alert was sent out via text 45 minutes after the incident occurred. If this had been a Virginia Tech type incident - 45 minutes is a dangerously long interval! Additionally, the text message was truncated on the messages - ending before final instructions. I hope the university uses this experience to improve their emergency notification process.

Question. I have been hearing details since yesterday about this event. What I recall was that the incident happened at the entrance of j-entry. Now, as I read the first of the above links, that article states that the shooting happened in the basement of j-entry of Kirkland. I swear that I even read this particular article last night and did not read that detail. Anyhow, was the incident inside or outside or Kirkland? I feel like that is an important distinction.

The Herald is now reporting that the victim has died. Article seems to indicate that the shooting was outside the dorm. Seems to be some conflicting information.
