So at the moment I have 10 schools on my list. I don't have the best stats and I want to get into college more than anything. On the other hand, I don't want to become overwhelmed or pick schools that I don't really want to go to. Not a lot of schools have the program I want with the curriculum I want. So should I search for more schools to widen my chances of getting admitted somewhere or should I just stick with the 10?

bump!!! :)

Do you love the ten? Is at least one a financial and academic safety?

I think that you should look for more schools, but cut some off your current list. Especially ones without the program you want. Narrow it down to 8-10. 2 absolute safeties that you will definitely get into with good aid and that you would enjoy attending. Some matches that have your program, and a couple reaches that would fit you perfectly. If you can’t imagine going to a school, and you find yourself wondering why it’s on your list, get rid of it.

Not knowing your stats or the schools on your list this is an impossible question to answer. In general ten schools is a reasonable number to apply to. Just be sure your list includes a couple of reaches, a number of matches, and a few safetys (including financial safetys).

These are the most important ones.

My GPA sucks (3.02) but my SAT is decent (1750). I do love the schools I have on my list, and I have the safeties, matches and reaches. The problem is it’s impossible for me to have a financial safety because my dad will not tell me what the maximum amount he’s willing to pay per year is. He keeps telling me that it depends on what they offer in financial aid but I tell him that that doesn’t matter because no matter what, there should be a set limit regardless of what the various schools offer. So it’s tough for me.

I would sit down and show him what each costs (COA) and then have him sit with you running the Net Price Calculators on each school web site. It may be eye opening for him.

^^^

Agree with Erin’s Dad. Have your dad run the NPCs on various schools’ sites.

You do need to know this. The amount of aid given really isn’t relevant. Some schools cost a LOT more than others, so even if they give “more” aid in dollars, they can still COST more than a less expensive school.

After you and your dad run the NPCs, have a talk, and then come back here and post.
