So basically i was expecting a 1500+ on the October SAT but scored only a 1460, and was planning on EDing to either Brown or WashU. This score is terribly low for both, and I don’t know if I can take it again, and honestly I don’t want to take it again either.
By the way, I’m an international student with average grades, 5 on AP Calculus, and will be taking the subject tests in November. I’m applying for Applied Math major.
“average grades”
Can you be more specific? How do your grades compare to others in your high school?
My scores converted to the American GPA would be around 3.8. I would say that I am in the top 20 students in my entire class
Do you require financial aid? If so, both Brown and WashU are need-AWARE for international students, meaning that your level of financial need will be considered during the admissions process, though to what extent I do not know.
Brown WILL meet your full need if admitted (idk about WashU,) but it is based on how the FA Office calculates aid, not your listed EFC on the CSS Profile, or the international student equivalent. Also, keep in mind that NPC calculators are meant for domestic students, and tend to breakdown in unusual situations, for international students etc.
A 1460 is not “terribly low,” but is on the lower-end for WashU and Brown, especially if you’re applying to Engineering/STEM where stats tend to be higher. Your level of need factors into this as well, as you’ll likely have to be a particularly strong candidate for Brown or WashU to be willing to offer you a substantial amount of aid as an international student.
My recommendation’s not to apply ED, especially if you would be relying on FA to attend (domestic students can back out of the ED agreement at Brown if the offered package is inadequate, though I do not know if the same holds for international students.) Apply widely (safeties, matches, and reaches: there are plenty of schools willing to offer merit scholarships to international students with stats like yours,) and hope for the best!
Hope that helps!
No, i do not
You’re best bet of these 2 for ED would be Wash U. They take significantly higher numbers ED. And, your score is in the ballpark of those of kids who’ve gotten into Wash U ED from our kids’ school. Brown is a much harder admit.
I agree Wash U is your better bet
