Should I Apply for Need Based Financial Aid?

I see now. I will definitely let him know. Thank you for clearing it up.

If you move quickly, there are schools with nice merit money that can be affordable to you. Our budget is about where yours are, and my son already has an EA acceptance with a half price deal bringing the cost down to the low $30K range BEFORE loans.

As others have said, you can only take those Direct Loans without parental involvement. They aren’t going to make up for that much of the gap at schools that cost in the $60K range. At your parent’s pay levels, you are not likely to get much if any financial aid. Certainly not in the $30K range. Run some NPCs for the schools you are considering and you’ll see what you are likely to be expected to pay. So you do have to go the merit route. If your stats are up there, as you indicate, there are some good possibllities for you out there, but you have to move fast. Alabama, Temple, some other schools offer full tution remissions at certain test threshholds. Schools like Denver ,Tulane, Fordham, Hofstra have awards that go as high as $30K a year and more.

. . .or he could just attend a UC or USC if worst comes to worst.

BTW, don’t bother emailing USC. You won’t get any fin aid there. You might get small amounts of fin aid from HYPS. Might.
