I met with a professor/teacher advisor for the CIS (Information Systems) major. They said it’s probably not for me, based on my career intentions.
I’m intending to start a startup IT corporation ASAP as a career. I need the knowledge of (many, several) programming languages for my intentions.
The CC I currently attend offers an Information Technology Transfer program (AS). They also obviously offer a Computer Science degree transfer program (also AS).
I want to program an enhanced (keyword: enhanced) version of Apple’s OS X/iOS Operating systems. Wouldn’t that be more of an IT major though, as IT is more broad in programming languages than Computer Science is? Computer Science focuses more heavily on Python & Java, C, and C++, which would also help. That’s why I’m easily considering going for the double major when I get to a University. I’m just debating on which IT Program I should choose.
The CC I currently attend luckily offers a 2+2 transfer program to RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology).
I also want to get into cybersecurity & networking. That would definitely be Information Technology first, am i correct on that? I know IT majors cover more networking & there’s a mid-amount of an overlap for cybersecurity when comparing IT & Computer Science.
This is what I’m asking for all people who might be wondering:
My question is should I be an Information Technology (IT) major right now over a computer science major if I want to cover more than just a few programming languages? Especially if I want to pretty much program iOS?
I think you may be confusing areas. Did you ask why the person did not think CIS was for you? Sounds like you really want computer engineering. My impression is that IT is not really a high level computer science/engineering level. It is more suitable for someone who has a AA and works in a IT department helping people whose computer’s freeze. Obviously all these areas involve computer technology but your aspirations sound more compatible with computer engineering with a couple of business and econ courses.
The teacher said CIS wouldn’t be for me b/c there’s not enough math & programming involved in that program. All they learn is Visual Basic (Vb.net) programming & entry GUI design. I’m required to take CIS100 at the CC either way so I can get into either IT or CS a semester early, is what my transfer advisor said.
The CIS program at the CC is more business-based. It’s not as much programming based as other programs, is basically what the teacher said. The teacher said it would be a step in the opposite direction to what my intentions are. The teacher said there’s more overlap between IT & CS at the CC & the 4yr schools. That’s why.
Based on my dad suggestion, do computer science and learn the basic such as algorithms, logic, critical thinking, some programming languages. This is help in IT or MIS which are application.
Based on another forum: I think I would be best suited for the Information Technology program right now. That degree & RIT’s co-ops/internships would be my fallback in case Computer Science Universities don’t accept me because of prerequesites (thats what the transfer advisor I met with said). I think I’m going to go with the IT degree program.
