Basically the title says it all. I am considering majoring in accounting and plan to get my CPA license. I just though about the possibility of accounting jobs being outsourced to other countries and becoming automated, which I believe might be a very real possibility because of the technology that is coming out. Basically I want to know your thoughts on this topic.

Thanks

Yes. However, unfortunately there are no jobs companies are not working on outsourcing. So be concerned (politically), but there is no point in worrying, since there is no alternative.

No.

Many jobs held CPAs are not able to be outsourced. Auditing, in particular, requires the accountant to be able to be on-site. If you plan to go into public accounting, which has a client service model requiring reasonable proximity to clients, you should not worry. Most companies also want and need their accountants on-site at their headquarters, which will continue to be located in the US. Some accounting work may be performed by a computer, but that is not the work that CPAs perform. CPAs will continue to adapt to technological changes, and accounting jobs in general are expected to grow much faster than average over the next 2 decades. Whoever told you that you need to worry about outsourcing is an idiot.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Nobody ever told me that it would be outsourced, I am just thinking about my future because I am planning on going to school for accounting next year and I idea just occurred to me that the jobs might be outsourced/automated. I just came here to ask for more experienced people’s opinions on the subject.

This belief that everything is going to be outsourced is BS. There is actually an opposite movement beginning where companies outsourced too quickly and then realized that the benefits that were expected did not come to fruition so they are ‘insourcing’ to solve the new problems that arose.

Well that is good to know. So do you believe that accounting is still a very good major?

In response to your last question, accounting is in my opinion the best Business major out there simply because of the relatively high job security and high compensation that comes along with it. It might be boring to some but if you like problem solving it can be extremely interesting.

Yes I agree, I think it takes a certain type of person to excel in accounting because it can be rather boring. The only experience I have so far though is high school accounting courses which are being counted as college credits so I’m not sure what to expect with the more advanced courses; I hear they are more enjoyable. Honestly, the major reason I want to get an accounting degree is because of job security and the money that can be made. I also want to know how a company function,as well as other things relating to accounting. I think that an accounting degree would not only lead to a great career, but also help in everyday problems regarding finances, and I believe accounting is the best route to do so.
