Should I change my essay topic?

My Common App essay is about my personal story with gymnastics. It talks about myself suffering various injuries and how they eventually led me to quit the sport. I then go on to talk about how even though I quit I found a new passion- Orthopedics. I know that essays about injuries can be typical in college applications and I was wondering if I should change my topic. My other idea was to write about my study abroad experience over the summer. Opinions/advice are greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Admissions people usually say to avoid them unless you feel REALLY passionate about it and/or you have a unique take on what is usually cliche. It sounds like you essay would be unique. My advice would be to not let the part about injuries be too long, and focus on the orthopedics aspect. You could write both essays if you have time and see how you feel about each one.

@peachstatekid Okay, thank you for the advice

You’re welcome!

Maybe. The thing to remember (see my general advice post) is that your past is far less interesting than your future, and you need to show how you embrace your potential. You need to show progress. In this particular case, bones heal without you doing anything but sitting there. So I would suggest that given 650 words, the entire story of the bone break, all of it, is done in the first 150 words - you need to shows that you understand that that is not the story here, your later development is the story. If you go beyond 150 words with that then you don’t understand the point of your essay.
