I am a junior and I did cross country last year (when I was a sophomore) for fun and for college admissions. I am not fast enough to run varsity; my mile time is like a 6:15, and pace is around 7 for 3 miles. I also played on the tennis team last year because I love the sport and have been playing for many years. So my question is, should I continue cross country to show that I am committed, or just focus on tennis and try to get into varsity for the spring season. I am worried because this year, I am taking ap computer science, ap biology, ap physics 1, analysis honors, english honors, regular us history, and ap spanish lang. Thanks!
Your courseload is big this year. I’d say just go with tennis if that’d make you happy.
Don’t ever do anything for the college application; colleges don’t want that and it’s clear to adcoms if you did an EC just to impress colleges. Do whatever makes you happy and keeps your grades up.
If your heart isn’t still in cross country then there’s no need to force yoursef to do something that you don’t enjoy. It sounds like tennis is a better choice for you and your overall well-being! Do what makes you happy and don’t waste time on things that you dread. I hope everything works out
I would run cross country. I have run cross country for the past 3 years (i’m a senior) and I have loved it. As a sport it helps teach discipline and dedication better than most other sports. Do stuff because you like it, not because of college. In the end of the day, your college decision won’t come down to whether you played tennis or cross country. The only thing college wise that really matters is that you did something in the first place besides just school.
Junior year is a key year for you academically so do what you love(sounds like tennis) so it will balance out the schoolwork. Cross country is nice because all the kids usually are academically gifted and they push each other. To be honest almost anyone can run so its popular with kids seeking a sport on the resume. I have 2 kids that run but life is too short to do a sport that you don’t enjoy.
Running XC will help get you in shape for tennis. It is also a lifetime sport.
Many people actually do well when they are in a sport because they are forced to be efficient…
