Should I continue SAT testing or should I stop?

Hello,

I have taken the SAT four times, I have received the following scores:

1310- (M 720, RW 590) (October)
1320- (M 760, RW 560) (March)
1300 - (M 680, RW 620) (May)
1320- (M 710, RW 610) (June was a bad test just saying)

I would like to go to a school like University of Michigan, but I don’t think these test scores are helping me out. I also have taken the ACT and I suck at it. What should I do?

Are you instate for Michigan?

What do you want to major in?

I’d submit the March and June scores.

And since June was especially egregious in its scale, retaking in August for the very last time may be worth a try since you’ve clearly improved.

However, your job right now should not be to dream about dream schools - it should be finding affordable* matches and safeties - that is, colleges where 1320 (1380 superscored) places you near the top 25% and we’ll into the top 25%.
Run the NPC on…
Trinity TX, Bentley, Fordham, Muhlenberg, Illinois Wesleyan, Hobart &WilliamSmith, Providence college, UScranton, Butler, Bradley, Wooster, UMD-BC, UAlbama, FSU,
UIowa, UDel, Penn State, Pitt, Temple, SUNY New Paltz, SUNY Geneseo, Ithaca, Drake, UNC Asheville, WarrenWilson , Beloit, UMN Morris, Eckerd, UTampa, Elon, U New Mexico, Sr Mary’s of California, UPortland, DePauw, Clarkson, Creighton…

Note that the public universities listed may be Academic matches but since you’re necessarily Oos at most of them (if not all) they’ll require a very big budget -35,40,45,50k.

  • Have you talked with your parents to see what they can afford from income and savings? Gone are the days when students could work their way through college. After the financial crisis huge budget cuts resulted in equally big cuts to universities' financial aid and merit scholarships, judt as tuition increased and borrowing rules were tightened. As a result, knowing what amount (range) is affordable for your family is crucial. So, run the NPC on Michigan as well as all universities listed.

@MYOS1634, Thanks your in depth response! I would like to major in some form of engineering. Do you think having a SAT score would impact me when applying for engineering schools? I will plan on retaking the SAT in august.

I think your SAT grades are solid enough to stop at this point…IDK if you took the ACT but you may consider that…it is being given again on Sept. 8. My eldest son goes to Ithaca College not for Engineering though and honestly that would be one of the schools forthest from my mind for that…have you considered the Univ. Of Rochester? My middle son goes there for CS and it’s a great campus with a great engineering program. My younger son who is a senior in HS is considering Towson or Temple for CS as he doesn’t want to go to the same school as his brother…

Also i don’t believe that Geneseo has an engineering program anymore, i know a couple of years ago they abolished the CS Program sadly.

You shouldn’t need to take it again since your score appears to be in the same range everytime. Unless you suddenly learn a bunch and feel as if you can now answer questions you previously were not able to. Of course, taking more tests can’t hurt your chances (only your wallet).

You appear to be scoring about the same range repeatedly so see why keep retaking? On the other hand, check to see that the Us require. Some require SAT subject tests including Math2 plus perhaps 2 others, especially for Engineering. Good luck.

I dont think you are prepping it correctly. It is possible to raise 100-150 points within months, many have achieve that.

With that said, your time is quickly closing. I would cancel the Aug test and take it in Sept to buy you more prep time.

Start with collegeboard practice, study the ones you get wrong. Invest in a local experienced tutor who can explain the process. Start the practice untimed, goal is to understand the questions. After nice progression, start timing yourself.

Michigan engineering out of state is more than brutal. Aim for 1500 or you have little chance.

Good luck to you. Hope to see you on campus one day.
