Hello,
My current uni (Im from London, England) is offering a student exchange to Oklahoma, not sure for how long yet.
Just wondering if I could get some of your opinions on the University, what its like, what there is to do etc. Also how are British people treated in the states?
Sorry for the long delay. Oklahoma (and Norman specifically) is very different from England, especially a big city like London. Much more spread out. Rain comes heavy and hard, but not frequently. People spend time outdoors, watching and playing sports, walking etc. They also like to do fairly typical student activities partying and hanging out with their friends.
Unless you go out of your way to be anti-American in some way, most students are going to treat you very well. The British accent will get you some added attention from whatever dating pool you may be interested in dipping in.
OU has a program called OU Cousins in which international or exchange students are matched up with a US student. Students are able to “match” after a introduction event or will be assigned a “cousin” if they don’t make a request. The benefits to this program are that international students have an easy way to make American friends and American students have an opportunity to make friends from other countries. Cousins socialize in pairs or small groups and the program also has events for all OU cousins. My daughter is participating in OU Cousins for her second year and enjoys the friends she makes. She has met far more students than only her official “cousin.” OU encourages our students to study abroad and everything I’ve heard suggests that OU is very welcoming of international and exchange students.
