I plan on dropping my APUSH class, I came to the United States early this year and I just want to challenge myself to take AP classes. I am currently taking PRE-AP ALGEBRA 2, AP ENGLISH, ANATOMY $ PHYSIOLOGY HONORS AND APUSH, but I don’t find APUSH interesting maybe because most of the kids have knowledge of history since their 8th grade but I have never taken history and I know nothing about the American History. Should I still drop the class or keep taking it( I have low grades in the class , whereas I have A’s in all of my other classes) .
plz drop it. You will struggle later on in the course because you don’t have any backround knowledge and colleges wont care enough cuz u have came to the U.S. during ur high school years
It’s a very intense class. Two of my kids, both born and educated in the US their entire lives, dropped it. Both enjoyed their basic American history classes much more and neither regrets dropping it. Both kids are history lovers and both felt that APUSH was too taught to the test. My other son, OTOH, loved APUSH and got a 5 on the test. I agree with the above poster that APUSH presumes that students have had an exposure to US history that you may not have and that this will be a hindrance to doing well in the class. IF your goal is just to learn, stay but it sounds like your goal is to get an A, so drop down to the regular class. The pace will be slower and you will do better.
Take US history honors or regular.
You’re already challenging yourself with AP Lang and an honors science class.
Are you here for the year or are you going to stay? Are you a sophomore?
Is algebra2 the right placement (it’s often the go-to class but for many students who come from good education system with strong math, precalculus is the best 10th grade math class.)
I am going to stay, I am a junior, and I am pretty good in Mathematics generally. When I came here I was a sophomore, and I took mathmodels because I didn’t what AP classes were then. Even my mathmodels teacher was asking me if I could go to precal and skip algebra 2, but because I just came here from another country I wasn’t allowed to move to Precal I had 90’s and above in all my regular classes. I even took physics and chemistry together as a sophomore. I was part of semifinalists in an olympiad competition before I came here; in physics.
Thank you, my goal is to learn and have good grades. My teacher gave me quite a lot of textbooks to read.
The one my classmates used in their middle school.
Thank you, but I still really want to take the class. I am just confused…
Moreso, I had a GPA of 3.8 on a 4.0 scale last year- in a regular class
Ask your Math and Physics teacher whether you can take a precalculus test and/or be placed in Precalculus because if you were in Physics Olympiads* as a freshman or sophomore, you must be chomping at the bit in Algebra2 as a junior!
APUSH is a different sort of challenge - it’d be better if you were taking AP Physics 2 for instance (and senior year AP Physics C, alongside calculus).
- please tell me your Math and Physics teachers know you were in Physics Olympiad?!
I already took regular physics second semester of last year. I didn’t know what AP meant then. I came from another country entirely. I
Students who come from another country to an high school here always take a class less than a year for them. Because I came during my sophomore year I wasn’t allowed to take Algebra 1 so I took mathmodels then.
There’s Physics, then AP Physics 1 or 2 (algebra-based, more in-depth than the basic physics course for freshmen/sophomores), and for seniors AP Physics C, which is hardcore and calculus based.
It’s not like AP Lang, which is a supercharged version of English class. These classes are actually different from a “regular” Physics class and have pre-requisites. AP Physics 1 has no pre-reqs but requires a good grasp of math. AP Physics 1 and 2 are WAY more in-depth than regular Physics and cover a different curriculum. Finally, AP Physics C has no “regular” version at all and requires AP Physics 1/2 or Physics Honors as a pre-requisite. It’s an upper level class.
BTW, sophomores who take Algebra2H are pretty common, as well as sophomores who take Precalculus. (Students who are advanced in Math take precalculus junior year or earlier, then Calculus 1 and 2 or AB and BC or straight to BC and Multivariable). Algebra2H as a junior is just the regular, non advanced track for kids who are average at math. Which isn’t your case since you were in Physics Olympiads.
Please mention the fact you were a semi finalist to the Physics Olympiad to your teachers so that they can place you into Precalculus. If you were in Olympiads for physics, you know precalculus and may even be ready for calculus (with integrals, etc.) It’s not a matter of year, but of level of achievement. If you’re able to do the math, you should be challenging yourself at the proper level. Ask for a test if necessary.
Thank you. I think I am going to drop APUSH and mention the Precalculus to my teacher.
It’s more important for you to take Precalculus (Honors) and AP Physics 1/2 this year, than APUSH. Next year, you can take AP World History or AP European History and it’ll “make up” for APUSH, if you were to wish to have an AP history.
I have to take US History as a junior, and World history as a sophomore but since I came here second semester of last yeare my counselor made me take World history for a month and Geography for the rest of the semester
If you are so inclined, you can take AP US Government next year. Most people think it’s easier than APUSH but I think that it might be a good way for you to get AP credit and learn about how the American system was designed to function. My son who dropped APUSH excelled in AP US Govt.
Since I am already dropping APUSH, and taking ALGEBRA 2 PRE-AP, ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY, and AP ENGLISH 3 will my GPA be on a 5.0 or on a 4.0 scale?
Please do everything you can to get into Precalculus honors. Algebra2 is very unlikely to be the proper placement. See if a parent can intervene. It is NOT the normal placement for an advanced student who can be a semifinalist in Physics Olympiads as a10th grader.
Take us history regular or honors this year, AP government next year. (AP world or AP euro can be senior courses too taken alongside or instead of AP gov).
If you want to take an AP class, see if you can take APphysics 1 or 2 (2 maybe?)
Can you take AP CS principles, if you want an extra AP class?
What’s your native language? Is it offered at AP level at your school?
What about another foreign language (beside English and your native language)?
Does your school offer 7 periods a day?6?8?
Are you preparing for the PSAT? If not, start studying. (it’s a scholarship content and unless your parents have $100,000 saved for your college, training till you make almost no mistake would help you.) The test is in October.
