Should I even bother?

<p>Hello all!</p>

<p>I'm a Canadian thinking of engineering, and it would be awesome and much appreciated if you all could give me an idea of my chances for regular decision.</p>

<p>Profile:
- Male
- Ethnicity: Canadian born - Indian parents
- Legacy: nope.
- able to speak conversational hindi/punjabi and french
- single: yes for all the ladies out there</p>

<p>Standardized Testing:</p>

<p>SAT's (superscored) = 2180
CR = 700
WR = 730
M = 750</p>

<p>(taking these again in december, right now getting 2300+ on practice tests)</p>

<p>SAT's II:
Math 2 = 800
Physics = 800</p>

<p>Academics:</p>

<p>I'm in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program which is the most rigorous curriculum offered in my area. I am also attending the top ranked school in my region.</p>

<li>standard level french - level 4 (killing me)</li>
<li>higher level english - predicted level 6</li>
<li>higher level math - predicted level 7</li>

<p>overall, my average last year was around a 93-94%</p>

<p>GPA: We in Canada don't actually do GPA's, but from what I gleaned from other people mines is comparable to a high 3 or 4? correct me if I'm wrong</p>

<p>Class Rank: We don't do this either, but my guess is probably top 10%</p>

<p>Other: Also in process of completing the Canadian Securities Course</p>

<p>Extra-Curriculars:</p>

<p>Presidents' Council (student representative organization for the largest region in Canada)
- served as Minister of Public Relations - dealt with the school board trustees and heads
- organized and planned a leadership conference for over 100 kids
- also held position as leadership developer at this conference</p>

<p>DECA:
- Finished 4th place at provincial competition for DECA - won a place at the international career development conference held in dallas, texas
- held title of Vice President in chapter</p>

<p>Peel Regional Science Fair (grades 7-12)
- designed and developed a more efficient hockey skate
- recognized for ingenuity with silver medal</p>

<p>The Arts:</p>

<p>Royal Conservatory of Music Classical Piano
- completed grade 8 classical piano
- same program from which Glenn Gould graduated</p>

<p>Volunteer:</p>

<li>Team Captain of Volunteers at local hospital - responsible for coordinating and managing volunteer efforts</li>
</ul>

<p>Athletics:
- Varsity Baseball Team - grade 11
- League Hockey - select level
- Cross country team - grades 9 - 10
- Swimming - in process of certification for National Lifeguard Service</p>

<p>Awards:
Top 25% in PASCAL math competition
4th Overall in DECA Provincials - won place in internationals (ICDC in Dallas, Texas)
Silver Medal at Peel Regional Science Fair
Two time Student of the Month Award Winner
Honors since grade 7</p>

<p>Hooks:
was fortunate to be able to achieve all the above with moderately severe hearing loss.</p>

<p>Essays:
I like them.</p>

<p>Recs:
- teachers were average at best
- Guidance rec should be good</p>

<p>As a favor, why don't you re-sort your EC's and provide a description so we know which ones are important and why you think they're important to Caltech adcoms? Eg, explain DECA and how it shows passion for math/science/engineering</p>

<p>wow, u guys know Chinese! Are there many Chinese ppl in Caltech?</p>

<p>There are a lot of Chinese people at Caltech (Caltech is >30% asian, most of these are Chinese I'd bet). I'm not one of them. I am simply learning Chinese because it interests me.</p>
