I am a senior in high school right now, and I have been accepted into both Texas Tech and UTA (University of Texas at Arlington). I am planning to major in either mechanical engineering or computer engineering, and I don't really know which college to choose. I want to know which school would getting a bachelor degree is better from. Texas Tech or UTA?

For engineering and a better college life experience…Texas Tech.

Tech, definitely.

Contrarian opinion here.

Whether or not you’ll enjoy college life in Lubbock depends greatly on your perspective.

It’s not the “city” that really gives the “college life experience”…it’s the spirit at the college. TT has school spirit.

Tech for sure. It is a hidden gem, in my opinion. Lubbuck isn’t a bad college town at all and the Honors College is excellent.

I wasn’t comparing city vs. rural or city vs. suburban when speaking of Dallas vs. Lubbock. I am more concerned about reports of discrimination and small-mindedness in the Lubbock community. I was particularly concerned about the incident with ta visiting womens’ basketball team a few years back. The surprising thing was, All-American Sheryl Swoops was a home-town heroine for the Texas Tech team, so you would have thought that racial bias in Lubbock, especially given Tech’s basketball success and the prominence of black women players, was a thing of the past. Prospective students should be aware of such incidents and inquire about the university’s response.

I don’t think there is anymore racial bias in Lubbock than anywhere else. I’ve never heard of any problems. Isolated incidents happen at all schools.

So, would you exclude all schools in all cities across this country that had a similar incident "a few years back’?

I was particularly concerned …

There are small minded people in every region of this country. You’re going to be “particularly concerned” pretty frequently if you closely examined all cities and colleges for incidents.

Seriously, at virtually EVERY school and in virtually every city you can find isolated incidents of people doing/saying stupid racial things. If we discounted every school because of isolated incidents, where would kids apply???

You guys said that Texas Tech is better because it has a “better college experience,” does it have a better education than UTA? because I am more interested in the education than the experience and which school would a bachelor degree from would get me a job

Henry32,

Since you know what your major is likely to be, it is OK for you to contact the department on each campus and ask them specifically about job placement. If you have time to visit the campuses in person, you can also check out the services provided by the career centers. You might find that one is better than the other.

Personally, I think a degree from Tech would help you more in the job search.

I certainly wouldn’t automatically minimize such events as “isolated incidents.” If I were a prospective student or parent, I would investigate further. The truth is, minority kids put up with such nonsense often.

I’m a senior as well. Have you visited both schools?
I visited UTA and the faculty and students were really nice! Everyone was really welcoming and I was the most comfortable there out of the 4 schools I visited.
As for job placement…idk. Arlington has a LOT to offer in terms of undergraduate research. Also, I was told that it’s not hard to find a job coming from there because some alumni continue on to engineering jobs in Arlington and other places surrounding Dallas. So, if you were looking to stay in that area it would definitely be easy to find a job.
But I’m majoring in Biology, so I might not know a lot concerning this.

Also, the Honors College at UTA has a lot to offer concerning research with faculty. The requirements to get in aren’t that difficult in my opinion.

Overall, I think it was good in terms of education.

Frankly, there really isn’t much of a comparison. Tech gets the nod in every area.

Have you done an overnight at each school and visited classes, especially in your major? Although it shouldn’t be the only factor to consider Texas Tech has a respected reputation in Texas and most people don’t have much of an opinion about UTA, but they wouldn’t put it on the level of Tech.

oh, and UTA has really good scholarships. Tech…not as good.
If you have the $, go to Tech. If you don’t or wanna save, UTA.
