Should I list my parents as separated or married?

It's pretty complicated, but pretty much my mom changed her address to live with her friend but she kind of still lives here. IDK if I should talk to my parents about it, cause it's kind of a touchy subject.

My mom stopped working recently and is on disability.

Our income is probably around $40,000 a year, and my parents are really far in debt so paying for college is going to be a problem. My ACT is 33, class rank top 10%, and over 300 hours of community service; I think my chances at getting merit scholarships are good. In terms of financial need scholarships, I'm not sure about whether I should say my parents are separated or married.

I was thinking that it's better to say they're married, because my mom's income is pretty low now compared to my dad's, so instead of only 2 people in the house, my dad has to pretty much support 3 people (Mom, Dad, and me).

What do you guys think?

If your parents are not living together, then you will file the as separated. Who do you live with; your mom or your dad? Who have you lived with the most during 2012? That person would be your custodial parent on the FAFSA (which you would fill out on January 1).

she kind of still lives here

Can you clarify? How often does your mom live at your home?

She had changed her address, but she still lives here.

does she live with you and your dad? If yes, you state that they are married
