When filling out applications for anything that has "Equal Opportunity" goals stated in its mission, how should I fill out this Race section? Will they look down on me if I put "White"?? Help!

i’m white/hispanic it’s great

I can take advantage of affirmative action, and of white privilege!

“White privilege”? Please elaborate.

Look at your lineage… If you’re even 1% American Indian put that. Think about what confusion could be caused. Possibly someone in your ancestry was a colonizer in Latin America or Africa, Hispanic or African-America.

Really, just put White.

The applications from those who answer “White” and those who answer “Prefer not to answer” are put in the “White” box.

Ugh. Just put white.

Or do what I did… put “Other- Human”. PS: I am white/Hispanic/Roma.

White privilege is an ideology typically espoused by ardent supporters of racial preferences and the continuing use of racial classification as a factor in our daily lives. It argues that whites, being the majority racial classification within the United States, benefit from their majority status and because they benefit, they must atone for this injustice by denouncing their racial classification and supporting policies that preferentially treat non-white, non-Asians, or else they are racists.

Is there a benefit to being white in this country? Probably yes. Is that something to be ashamed of? Hell no!

If you’re already accepting that you get a benefit for being white how aren’t you at least a little ashamed that said benefit is denied to others due to their race, which they have absolutely no control over? Not personally ashamed to be white, but ashamed of society for letting that happen.

edit: And just put “white.” I’m pretty certain “PNTA” won’t help you.

I should clarify. I meant that no white should feel ashamed of his racial classification.

I just found out that white privilege falls under “critical race theory.” I invite everyone to read [this article](Bending the Law) from Judge Alex Kozinski. Critical race theory has got to be the stupidest thing I’ve heard of in a long time. Thankfully, it is a fringe view that will stay on the fringe.

All I know is I’m less likely to be racially profiled at the airport for “additional screening” than an Arab-looking feller who wears a turban.

dude, just put white, they’re not going to look down on you for it; equal opportunity isn’t code for “get rid of whitey”. :)

“aren’t you at least a little ashamed that said benefit is denied to others due to their race, which they have absolutely no control over?”
we can’t help which gender/race we’re born with, so no sense in feeling ashamed over it. i’m white and benefit from AA (I’m on “women in science” scholarship) - I used to think, well, i only got this scholarship based on my gender, not because i’m smart, and that made me feel kind of embarrassed - which is stupid. there’s no sense in being ashamed over benefits you can’t help, whether you’re a white guy who feels bad about his privilege or a black kid who feels like he only got into princeton because of AA.

Read the last sentence of my post. I don’t object to using every advantage you can, but at the same time you have to look at the system that is giving you the advantages and… you can’t be proud of that. I can’t be anyway. I don’t want this to turn into an AA debate or anything of that nature, and I’m not suggesting anyone should be ashamed (or proud) of their race since it is something entirely out of their control. What Fabrizio said just rubbed me the wrong way a little bit, since his “Hell no!” seemed to be directed at whether or not he was ashamed that society would give certain benefits to one race. He has since clarified and apparently I read what he said the wrong way.

It was my fault for making the original remark unclear. I certainly do not endorse or condone X supremacy ideologies, but at the same time, I am equally opposed to any ideology that states that people of X racial classification must feel ashamed that they are Xs for whatever reason.

I’m curious. If you put “Pacific Islander” instead of “White”, how could they verify/disprove it?

^ Most colleges will kick you out if they find out you lied on your application. How they find out about it, I don’t know.

Can’t wait until this box is NOT on applications.
Until then, let’s change “prefer not to answer” to “none of your business”.

And - no WAY college could kick you out. It’s not possible to prove a negative. What can they do ? Let’s say O’Bama chooses to put “Caucasian”. What are they gonna do? He knows up and they say “Hey, you’re not caucasion, you can’t be, you don’t look like it”.

I knew a guy who once wanted to get a book from the library where his sister attended college. So he borrowed her library card and went to get the book. Librarian: “Ummm…YOU aren’t Janice!” He: “Yes I am and I don’t really appreciate it when people make fun of my name either”. She: (mortified) “Oh, er, um…yeah, OK, here’s your book”.

Since we are all part of a human race and race is all self-identification, they can’t prove you lied.

I am white with light brown hair and blue eyes. I don’t look Hispanic, but I am nonetheless.

Yeah they really can’t. Maybe with a DNA genealogy test but they wouldn’t do that.

Like someone said, Obama’s called black or African-American by the majority of Americans. But “technically” he’s mixed raced (I’m sure almost everyone is, but for the sake of argument he’s mixed. Half-white half-black). So he could pick “white” or “black” or both or “other.”

I could possibly have a small bit of Pacific Islander or Native American blood in me. I should then be able to pick that “Pacific Islander/Native American” box.

Just tick what you want. It’s not like the racial categories are set in stone. Why are Middle Easterners “white” but the countries immediately adjacent to their own “Asian”? In a few years, they might decide that all Hispanic people are Native American again and Jews are Asian because Israel is in Asia.

I am assuming you mean Latinos and South Americans become Native American.

Then I’d go from being Hispanic/white/Roma to white/Asian/Roma. o.O I am NOT Asian!
